Great book!

I picked up this book to help me better understand the subject of operating systems as I work through an OS course at school. This book starts you out with minimal system that is built up chapter by chapter as you explore topics like concurrency, process scheduling, and runtime environments, etc. I'm only a couple of chapters in but so far I really appreciate both the accessibility of the text as well as the hands-on examples. Where other books describe things like race conditions or the cost of I/O this book actually demonstrates them with working code for a real OS. It's really helpful to be able to work with an OS like Xinu on a readily available inexpensive board like the Galileo or Beaglebone Black.

So far I've been having a lot of fun with this book. I'd recommend it to anyone who is willing to experiment with a working OS on real hardware but might not be comfortable jumping into Linux source just yet.

See the concept, see the code.

As Dr. Comer claims in the beginning of this book, it is a very clear instructional book that is different from any other operating systems text book. A good example is the poor way most OS books try to visualize the concept of a process using a squiggly line. Instead this book describes the concept and before going on much further actually has exerts from the XINU code itself and if you're unsure about anything "fluffy" concept seeing the code now makes this idea much simpler. Further the code is discussed and then parallels to modern operating systems and the simplifications being made in XINU are made apparent at every step so the reader who is just learning about the inner-workings of operating systems for the first time isn't overburdened with rigorous implementation details.

Clean code, elegant implementation and clear explanations

This book succesfully highlights the Xinu philosophy: small and elegant.
And powerful I might add. Because, after you download the source code
from the official website, you'll have a complete implementation of a
modern OS to play with.

The implementation together with the book covers everything from process
creation and management, context switching, memory management, interrupts
and interrupt handling, file systems and device drivers including a console
driver, real-time clock driver and Ethernet driver and also direct memory
access (DMA) devices. Everything you'll find in a modern OS, you'll also find
here, only minimal and understandable and readable.

What stands out though is the clean implementation. The code is just
beautiful; no line of code is greater than 74 characters; variable names
are consistent among files; minimal code to implement the job at hand;
clear separation of modules. There is a lot to learn just by reading the
code alone. I've also learned a thing or two about pointer manipulation
and choosing the right data structures.

Most of the chapters also contain the code of the modules/files it is
presenting. So you might not actually need the source code, or a computer
to actually follow the implementation. But for the best of results,
actually jumping around between files in an editor and trying to understand
what everything is supposed to to, before reading the explanations in the
book will bring great benefits. The language in the book is dry, no
useless jokes or remarks, just going right to the point, which is excellent.

For a hands on approach, that is, actually running the Xinu and see the
effect of your changes, you only need a BeagleBone Black or a Galileo board.
I've used the BBB together with an FTDI adapter. Everything else is just
software.

Take your time with this one, and most importantly: Enjoy the Xinu!

Extremely impressed with this work, highly recommended.

There is very little -even after 60 plus years, material on the Imperial Japanese navy written by western authors. The ones I've seen are biased, repeat cliches, or are simply inaccurate. I know now that Mitsuo Fuchida's account of Japan's failure at the battle of Midway is largely questioned, even rejected in Japan but has been the basis for many books in the western world.

Hallelujah, this author does not make mistakes like that. He took the trouble of combing through thousands of microfiched archives taken directly from the Japanese at the end of the war. His knowledge of the Japanese language is definitely a plus as he explains more than once how subtle nuances in translation between Japanese and other languages can alter the meaning of the content. This was evident in the intelligence gathered by the Americans, as the author points out.

The book starts with an explanation on how militarism had dominated Japan's politics and how even Yamamoto risked assassination over his opposition to a war with the USA. You get a flavor on what it was like to be a naval cadet or officer in the pre-war imperial navy. Dull also points out some of the misconceptions and political mistakes that the US government made that may have contributed to Japan's decision to go to war. One of the key points in the book is the statement from Admiral Nagano to none other than the emperor stating that Japan must go to war, even though it is a war she very likely will lose but a nation not willing to fight for her survival is doomed anyway.

Dull also mentions that the Japanese had some knowledge of the US Navy 'rainbow' plan, a plan crafted in case of war against Japan, in that the basic strategy was the island-hoping that later became a reality.

Every major or even medium sized engagement or operation is covered, using the Japanese name for such. For example, the battle for Savo Island is known to the other side as the First Battle of Solomon Islands. The author paints the battles, by phase, extrapolating the Japanese interpretation as well as the opposing one, resulting in the most accurate assessment possible, as each side frequently misjudges the enemy's position and intentions or actions during the heat of combat.

The text is extremely readable, you cannot put this book down. There aren't many photos but they are not missed. Dull's style flows naturally, making his a very pleasant book, and the amount of information given is simply astounding. Book is over 400 pages, but I read it in less than 5 days, it is that good. I'm now on my second pass, discovering new facts that either escaped my grasp or simply forgot. This book is a keeper, and it should form the basis for many future books on the theme.

Thorough overview of the IJN

Paul Dull's work is shorter than Morison's compendium on the US Navy in WWII, but no less important. Published 30 after the war, it presents a tidy account of the IJN. Research from hundreds of reels of microfilm. Maps/illustrations suffer only from the technology used in 1978and the small size format of the book. Don't expect detailed discussion on doctrine or decisive battle. One can find other works that expand on any of the battles or campaigns.

Best read as an overview of the IJN in WWII. Later works may call some of the book into question, but that is the fate of any book that covers a topic for the first time in history: to suffer the slings and arrows of further study. Ditto Samuel Morrison's compendium on the US Navy in WWII.

About the Author
Subhuti joined the Triratna Buddhist Order in 1973 and has since devoted himself to the practice and teaching of Buddhism. A Reminder That Even Today a Life of Peace is Possible

I have relatives that have been unemployed for far longer than they ever thought that they would be. I have neighbors that have been forced to sell their homes at a fraction of what their homes were worth 5 years ago. I have aging parents who lost most of their net worth in the stock market and I have co-workers who have taken in their college graduate children and their aging parents because neither can support themselves financially. These are times where finding peace in your life can be a struggle.

Dr. Robert Puff has written a book that all of us need to read. It is a book that reminds us that the key to being at peace, the key to being happy have nothing at all to do with Wall Street, nothing to do with the housing crisis and nothing to do with anything in our external world.

This is not your "la la land", lets all sing Kumba Ja and make our troubles go away book. This is a book that spells out the roots of disappointments and explains, in English, how to avoid the pitfalls that cause us all to stress out, to become fearful and to despair.

At one point, Dr. Puff reminds us that, "Don't forget that happiness is a transient state of being. Like everything else, your current situation will pass and then there will be another state of being, and another. Let go of the outcome of those situations." By reminding us of the transient state of happiness, he reminds us that fear, stress and unhappiness will pass as well.

My grandmother was a huge prayer. One day I asked what she was praying for. I expected her to say that she was praying for better health, for me to get an 'A' on my math test or for my father to make more money.

My grandmother told me that she never prayed to God for an easier life because easy and hard had no real meaning. She explained that her prayers asked that God give her the strength to be the kindest, strongest and best person that she could be.

Dr. Puffs teachings echo my grandmother's teachings, the teachings of the serenity prayer and many of the teachings of the Christian Bible, the Bhagavad-Gita and the sacred writings of the Hindu philosophy. Unlike those teachings,however, Dr. Puff has written a modern book with concrete instructions of how to live a life that will bring peace and happiness.

This is a book written for anyone struggling with circumstances that are causing them stress, angst, anger or simply a lack of inner peace. Get this book, read it, internalize it and put Dr. Puff's advice into action. You will be so happy that you did.

A Gentle Primer on Living in Peace

Dr. Robert Puff's guide on how to live in peace and be happy is a written in such a way that you feel guided in the behaviors that you can implement in order to simplify, enjoy and appreciate your life.

The author gives examples and anecdotes regarding the traps that we fall into that lead us to unhappiness that had me nodding my head in recognition continuously. For me, reading this book reminded me of how our thoughts dictate our feelings.

I have studied Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) and I see this book as almost a layman's primer to CBT. Much of what is in this book, in the form of guidance, can be had by attending 6-8 very expensive Psychiatric or Psychological counseling sessions. Reading this book is more enjoyable, more affordable and easier than therapy and I recommend it highly.

After finishing this book I felt replenished. You know that feeling that you get, in your gut, when you have just gotten a second breath? This book made me feel that way.

Challenged by Hope

I have devoted most of my life to the quest for justice, the path has been beset by victory and loss, hope and frustration. I often find myself contending with a deep awareness that too many of us - including the radicals and do-gooders that I count among my friends - including my own self! All of us seem to be stuck in a paradigm that has reached a dead end. And yet it is all we know. And so we give our hearts and our passion, our energy and life force to a process that often seems doomed.

I have had the privilege of participating in some of the learning journeys beautifully described in this Frieze and Wheatley book. I can honestly tell you that they bring us as close as we can get to the experience without actually being there. What is beautiful about the book is that it brings the reader to that place of hope and upheaval that one experiences on a learning journey. We get to witness phenomenally hopeful responses to injustice and despair. Bold, autonomous, real walk outs from a system that is broken.

The reader is filled with a sense of deep human solidarity, a sense of pride in what these people can accomplish, a sense of hope in our shared capacity to walk out and walk on to something better, something new and something that is fundamentally good. But this does not happen without being beset by the nagging questions of scale, the questions of where is policy change? Where is the state? Isn't all of this just quaint - cute, beautiful but exceptional - irreplicable. We have to come up against the core assumptions of the dominant approach. And if you are a do-gooder, you have to come up against the core assumptions of your own approach.

It is not an easy process, and the conclusion is not forgone. But if you think that something is not working, not even with your own approach to change and social transformation, if you think that our humanity is in need of something else, then these walk outs are onto something, and they seem to be walking on to a very powerful place.

Fascinating but unrealistic

A pretty good read that is somewhat akin to the concepts in "Cultivating Communities of Practice" (http://www.amazon.com/Cultivating-Communities-Practice-Etienne-Wenger/dp/1578513308), putting them into narrative form. The authors write about their journeys to communities around the world - in places like Zimbabwe, India, and Mexico - and their experience with communities that are breaking the mold and finding their own creative, group-based solutions to problems. These people have "walked out" of the systems that aren't working and have "walked on" to help create their own future and solutions (thus the name of the book, "Walk Out, Walk On," a phrase that is actually used very sparsely in the book itself). The book contains actual pictures of the places/people talked about the authors try to paint a vivid picture of the communities they encounter. The point of the book is that these kinds of community-based, creative solutions come about organically and are not imposed or transplanted. The authors spend a good portion of the book criticizing the West for being a know-it-all and importing solutions into other countries and communities that have ended up causing more harm "e.g., the Green Revolution." Their point is argued very convincingly, but they use a pretty condescending tone (as other reviewers have noted) and don't seem to recognize that the communities about which they write represent the exception, not the rule. As many books tend to do, the authors write about fascinating exceptions and then create a whole new, over-arching mental framework for the rest of life from these exceptions. In this case, the authors witness these fascinating, community-based solutions in different spots of the world, and then conclude that the answer to poverty and other problems is the impoverished community itself coming up with its own solution. They seem to argue that the worst thing we can do is try to come in and help and impose our own solutions, but they forget that the vast majority of poor communities have NOT come up with their own solutions nor do they seem motivated or able to do so. Nevertheless, the authors make some very powerful observations about the nature of leadership and community, and the stories they tell are definitely interesting. But I found it more frustrating than inspiring to read, because I kept thinking, "I don't know how to make that work in my context."

this book contains the seeds of the future

Sitting around fretting about the future of the human race is a favorite modern activity. Too many people, not enough food, climate change, not enough of this, too much of that. Most of the solutions being offered by development bankers, politicians, economists, and scientists merely shift problems from one place to another, postpone the day of reckoning, and/or create fragile interdependences that are certain to end badly, especially for the poor.

High-tech "silver bullets", like miraculous new sources of energy, won't solve the problems. Even if we do manage to create such new technologies, they are all too likely to perpetuate the status quo wherein the rich get richer, the poor get poorer, and indigenous people lose their land.

Deborah Frieze and Margaret Wheatley have boldly created a window into something different.

Read this book to hear inspiring stories about people who step forward, people who are personally invested in the problems being solved and who work together; and about communities that exchange ideas with other communities as peers, rather than having short-sighted non-solutions handed down to them from a distance.

Using these stories as a starting point, Walk Out Walk On captures insights about change better than anything else I've read. It is like going on your own learning journey, with these two very wise guides.

I hope that by reading this book, others will be inspired, and the gears of change will start turning.
