About the Author
Frankie Condon is an associate professor of English and the faculty coordinator
of the writing center at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She lives in Lincoln
with her husband, Mike, her three children, Dan, Lucy, and Grace, her mom,
Suzy, and two dogs, a cat, and two chinchillas. Her published work includes
The Everyday Writing Center: A Community of Practice, coauthored with Michele
Eodice, Elizabeth Boquet, Anne Ellen Geller, and Meg Carroll. Frankie's essays
have appeared in the Writing Center Journal, Praxis, College Teaching, and Junctures.

Buy this book!

This book offers a rich and compassionate look at white identity in efforts to resist racism. Each chapter blends the author's personal experience, voices of activists, and history. Condon writes with humor and sincerity. As she reflects on powerful stories, she offers new ways for white readers to look at how to approach our role in changing racism, how to embrace the challenges of resisting racism despite a lifetime of benefitting from it. Both activists and educators might appreciate this book. And it's a beautiful, easy read -- I could not put it down. I can see why this book won an Educators Award from DKG for helping us "(think and act) in today's complex society."

Sign me up too

I am not an academic, but Condon is able to do the tricky task of weaving theory and her life story together to braid a powerful book I read cover to cover over the holidays, something I haven't done with a book by an academic in . . . actually, never. It has its redundancy, which is helpful for me in terms of grasping and remembering critical ideas, and I wanted more of Condon's own narrative to be more consistently present, but the author builds her exposition in meaningful ways, nonetheless. I kept thinking of people I wanted to have conversations with about the book--with the author, my college-age daughters and co-workers.
Many people, namely the POTUS, have talked about having meaningful conversations about race. I think Condon helps "whitely" people begin and understand what's at stake and what's involved in sticking with it.
