About the Author
Roger Koenker is McKinley Professor of Economics and Professor of Statistics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. From 1976 to 1983 he was a member of the technical staff at Bell Laboratories. He has held visiting positions at The University of Pennsylvania, Charles University, Prague, Nuffield College, Oxford, University College London and Australian National University. He is a Fellow of the Econometric Society.

new views for modern data

Modern data are plentiful and, as always, complicated. Yet the demand for interpretations and explanations are ever more urgent. There's a pressure to do more in less time.

Quantile regression is based upon a reinterpretation of the least squares method, providing a flexible means of doing data analysis. Rather than seeing a dataset as a "signal contaminated with noise", it suggests all the effects recorded there are worthy of study, if only to understand processes which interfere with primary measurements.

In cases of complicated observations and datasets, it promises to serve as a powerful tool.

Prior to purchase, I recommend Koenker, Hallock, J.Econ.Perspectives 15(4), 143-156, Fall 2001, and especially Cade, Noon, Frontiers Ecol. Environ 2003, 1(8), 412-420 as previews.

I look forward to indulging myself with the text.

Great book - But severe typos in the Kindle edition at least.

This book is an important reference on quantile regressions. It gives an overview that papers will not easily give you. However, detailed proofs are usually only available in the published papers.

However, I bought the Kindle edition of the book, and there are numerous severe copyediting/typographic problems in the book. For instance, section 4.6.1 has an important sentence that never finishes. Somewhere else in the book the maths get jammed. I have not checked the print edition of the book, but these are severe problems that should have been eliminated with copyediting.

Otherwise, this book is crucial for anybody doing quantile regression analysis.

Resource for any economist

QR is a fascinating and increasingly important tool for any economist (note that I leave of the "-trician"). Especially when we consider heterogenous agent models, the standard techniques of mean-regression seem comparatively mindless. Who better to teach the subject than the man who invented it? He's got an engaging voice and clear pen.

The Skills Your Grandparents Had, But You Probably Don't

Until I checked this book out of the library, I had rarely given a thought to getting "back to basics," that is learning how to be more self-sufficient. After I read the book, I soon bought it, because it opened my eyes to the many ways that I am almost entirely dependent upon others for my basic needs. "Back to Basics" is a helpful guide for those who want to get away from it all and live totally independently on a farm, and even those like myself that live in town, but that want to become more self-sufficient, and less dependent on expensive fossil fuels and foods that someone else has raised or grown.

"Back to Basics" is a colorful, easy-to-understand encyclopedia of basic skills. There are hundreds of color photos, and most lessons are laid out step-by-step, making the concepts very easy to learn. The book is divided into six basic parts:

I. Land: Buying It - Building on it (how to choose land, build a home, develop a water supply, create a sauna, etc)

II. Energy from Wood, Water, Wind, and Sun (making your home more efficient, how to use wind energy, setting up a solar-powered house, etc)

III. Raising Your Own Vegetables, Fruit, and Livestock (how to properly grow all sorts of fruits, vegetables, and grains, how to farm fish, beekeeping, butchering an animal, etc)

IV. Enjoying Your Harvest Year Round (canning, preserving all kinds of foods, making cheese and wine, etc)

V. Skills and Crafts for House and Homestead (making natural dyes, weaving, woodworking, stenciling, soapmaking, making homemade perfumes, etc)

VI. Recreation at Home and in the Wild (camping, canoeing, kayaking, celebrating holidays, etc)

This book definitely has the potential to help all of us live more self-sufficiently, learning to do the things that our grandparents probably learned growing up. However, one possible drawback is that becoming self-sufficient takes a lot of work, and in the case of switching your home over to some type of alternative energy, a lot of money as well. Most readers are probably not going to have the land, time, and money to make some of the more significant changes suggested. However, the book still offers a lot for the rest of us, and at the least, educates us as to what it takes to live in a self-sufficient manner. Another possible drawback is that the book tries to squeeze a lot of information into 456 pages. This means that while you are getting a very concise, and surprisingly detailed, overview, you may need to consult more detailed sources if you need more help than what the book offers.

Overall, this is an interesting and useful book that offers practical ways to become more self-sufficient, something that is highly relevant in these times of rising energy and food prices. My family has already used some of the ideas, starting our first garden this year.

Some good information, but unfocused (details)

This illustrated book has been published chiefly for those who are new to country living, and/or who have an interest in self-sufficiency and in retrieving some of the "lost arts" which are appurtenant to traditional country life. The information is mostly introductory and rudimentary... a good start for most folks new to these areas of interest.

I have lived in the foothills of rural Appalachia for 55 years and have been involved in carrying out nearly all the construction, activities, arts, and crafts found within this text. Some of the text, (along with the accompanying drawings and photos), is quite good. The information is solid and one can get started along the right track; however, the work goes astray (the publishers sort of "threw in the kitchen sink"), into areas which are not particularly relevant to traditional country living. The editors simply went too far afield when they got into topics such as "Winter Sports," "Kayaking and Rafting," "Foraging for Flour and Emergency Rations," and so on. Most of these subjects are tagged on at the end, I felt just to make the book longer, (it's plenty long enough at 456 pages!)

Additionally, on topics such as "Emergency First Aid," "Fly Fishing" (and fish identification), and "Recipes," there are obligatory sections, none of which are all that useful since these are subjects, any one of which could fill volumes. Had these areas of specific interest been omitted, the more appropriate topics could have been somewhat expanded, such as "Barn Building" or "Preserving Meat and Fish".

While there is quite a great deal of quality information in this Skyhorse Publishing Third Edition (2008) for those seeking a new or improved life in the rural countryside, I still feel that the editors strayed off-base to the point that I cannot heartily recommend the work.

Napoleon's arrival on the European stage intensified these fears, and the changes he wrought across Europe fully justified them. Yet he also brought some comfort to those rulers who managed to survive: he had tamed the revolution in France and the hegemony he exercised over Europe was a kind of guarantee against subversion. Once Napoleon was toppled, the monarchs of Europe took over this role for themselves.

However, the nature of their attempts to impose order were not only ineffectual, they also managed to weaken the bases of that order. As counter-productive as anything, for example, was the use of force. Reliance on standing armies to maintain order only served to politicize the military and to give potential revolutionaries the opportunity to get their hands on a ready armed force.

The wave of revolutions in 1848 might have embodied the climactic clash that many had come to expect, but it was no Armageddon, lacking the kind of mass support that rulers had dreaded and revealed the groundlessness of most of their fears. Interestingly, the sense of a great, ill-defined, subversive threat never went away, indeed it lingers on even today in the minds of world leaders.

Adam Zamoyski's compelling history explores how the rulers and governments of the time really did envisage the future and how they meant to assure it.

great topic for a book

This is a very interesting angle and topic, but it is treated somewhat academic. There are a lot of bright moments but in general a little more humor could be mixed into this wonderfully bizarre story. The book is at its best at its late part when the author releases himself and draws more broad conclusions. The topic and rigour of the book is in itself worth the read and will give you new great new insights, but i would have prefered a little more zest.

This book is so good in many ways. It is short but is detailed, simple and organized, straight-to-the-point and very helpful.

The introduction is good, it introduced Clickbank to me smoothly and easy, it is actually my very first time to hear about it and I really find it very interesting. I like the part when the author provided easy to follow steps on how to become an affiliate marketer and the tips he provided on how to be successful in it.

The book overall has a nice flow and informative. I am glad I read it because I learned something new today. I've learned a lot, I might give it a try.

Good read and I would recommend it to all.

Excellent guide for beginners!

This book is a great resource for people who want to make money online but not sure where to start. It contains a detailed overview of a privately owned affiliate marketing company called ClickBank, a discussion of the process of becoming a marketer with that company, and the advantages of working with ClickBank. The book also includes a helpful and detailed discussion of profit generation process, presents ideas about what to write in product review articles, and how to use keywords. It also discusses hoplinks, best ways to promote products, and how to choose products that are right for you to market. A great guide for beginners!

The author writes a good step by step plan of action as both an affiliate and a vendor. Explanations are given for what Clickbank is and how it works. Also ideas on how to market products on Clickbank, with some do's and don'ts.
The same is true for how to be a vendor. The basic plan and outline from website set-up and recommendations for design. Also places to get help with getting it done.
I deducted a star for what seemed to me too many repeats of some of the information, in the middle of the book.
I thought that the way everything was outlined in the concussion was very useful.
I would recommend this book to anyone that is looking for a book about Clickbank. And wants some ideas on how to make money with it. From a straight forward honest point of view.

About the Author
An American living in the UK, Eliot Siegel has been a professional fashion and portrait photographer for over 25 years. He has worked for a multitude of fashion magazines in New York, Milan, Paris, and London and has shot for Bloomingdales, Macy's NY, JC Penney's, Reebok, Nokia, and Motorola. Siegel lectures and gives workshops on fashion, portrait, and fine art photography at various colleges, and has been Associate Lecturer in Photography at Plymouth University in England. Eliot Siegel is also the author of Fashion Photography Course (Barron's).

A wonderful answer for "Where do we go now?"

There's an urban legend that the reason that Guns & Roses "Sweet Child of Mine" ends with the lyrics "Where Do We Go Now" was because Axl was asking a question, not because he was singing a lyric. He literally wanted to know "where do we go now?" and that ended up sticking as part of the song.

When shooting models, sooner or later, you will run into a "Where do we go now" moment. In many cases, the model will want clear instruction about what the vision is, where to stand and where to put her hands. The photographer will need to have a good set of ideas to blast past periods of when the imagination runs dry, and avoid the moment where nobody knows what to do next.

The classic way of doing a model shoot is to get the safe shots in the bag before experimenting. The problem with experimenting is that you can get stuck with a lot of stuff that's not working before getting back on track.

That's what makes this book great, by showing how to see how variations might lead to something you might not have thought about, and you can get your homework done before spending (wasting) time at the shoot. You can also start adding more "safe shots" to your bag of tricks by having the poses you want well thought out before hand.

The book is beautifully done, with a short technical section and a very extensive posing section.

The poses are organized by position, so it does make it very nice on how to get from one pose to another with a minimal amount of effort. It makes sense in terms of organization, but there are also downsides too as it may not lead to the best way to get a series of poses in mixed positions. Still, I am glad that it's organized by position, because I've seen plenty of posing books that were basically unusable because of how complex the organization was.

The second thing I'll note is that it's written for the photographer as the intended reader, not the model. Again, this is not a ding, but just thought I'd clarify that. The model can definitely pick up a lot of value out of this, but the text is aimed more towards the shooter.

The third thing, it would be nice if there were some way of communicating a series of poses to a model without flipping through the book itself. Would love a way to have an app that communicates just the poses I want to work on rather than pulling out the book and trying to explain the shot.

Great book overall, heartily recommend it. You can't go wrong having this on your shelf.

Kindle Version Formatting is Horrible!

The publisher evidently didn't bother (or care) about how this would look on a Kindle Fire so shame on them. Examples of what I'm referring to. Paragraphs with 1 word columns that go on for page after page.

Another example: Series of photos where the caption for one photo appears on the next page above (or below) the next photo. Depending on the aspect ratio of the photo, there are sometimes a caption above and below the photo with one being for a photo on a different page.

While the content itself is great, the total disregard by the publisher makes the Kindle version of this book almost useless.

finally a posing book worth it's money!

There are many posing books out there, most - if not all - are useless to me. Generic poses, not much explained, unexciting photos.

This book is different. I love almost all the main photos in this book (subjective of course) and the variations shown with what to avoid and why are really helpful. Light diagrams add to the usefulness.

I don't think there's a pose not covered in this book. Keep it in your studio or bag (though it's heavy) and if you run out of steam during a shoot, open any random page and go from there.

The poses are more towards (high) fashion and maybe a bit of glam, not necessarily what you'd use to photograph grandmothers or female executives, everything is very stylish with sexy undertones.

Easy the best book I've seen on posing, and I've looked at quite some.
