Along with the familiar circle, square, triangle, diamond, rectangle, octagon, and oval are the less frequent star, heart, and crescent. Each shape has its own verse and double-page spread packed with visual examples. There are even some extras for observant children to discover. The watercolor-and-ink illustrations are bold and clean, with ample color; however, a texturing technique occasionally results in a slightly murky appearance. At no time does this texturing obscure the text or interfere with line or shape. Those tired of bright primary colors in children's books may find the muting a nice change. Cataloging several examples for each of ten regular shapes, Greene develops in an ever-changing rhyme scheme the premise that all shapes are made from bent lines. It's an eye-opening insight for readers, but confusing when blocks are considered square, a bubble, marble, and ``curled kitten'' are included in the list of circles, and ``star'' is defined as ``the shape of a fish.'' Readers may also falter at the triangle spread, since the three blocks of text are placed so that it's hard to tell in what order they're to be read; the ``tent built just for you'' has a triangular opening, but what children will notice is the diamond- shaped side. Kaczman's picture-book debut features a set of stylized, evenly colored, very simply drawn scenes, sometimes viewed from playfully skewed angles or featuring sight gags--a police officer chowing down on a doughnut, a kilted man playing hopscotch. Still, an instructional intent hangs heavy over this, and the examples are not always on target; a better book on the topic is Dayle Ann Dodds's The Shape of Things (1994). This book is lively and fun with great illustrations and wonderful rhyming words. I purchased it to help teach elementary school children about two of the elements of art: line and shape. It did the job very well and has so many examples in the course of the poetry that it is one of the books you can easily read over and over.

This is a rare case where illustration style and story does not try to partonize parents and their children nor does it come across as an over-intellectualized wanna-be childrens book. It can be quite difficult to attract visitors to a website and once you have got them there, perhaps as few as one in twenty may make a purchase or otherwise engage. For e-commerce websites, this can be a very difficult nut to crack; so a book like this may help increase the odds!

The authors say that they guide the reader into doing more than just boosting traffic levels – quality matters. There are three key aims – increase the quantity of visitors; increase the percentage of visitors who buy and increase the value of any subsequent purchase – that hopefully are achieved through improved and optimised usability, persuasive communications and a functional venue. The aims are based around current theory and research, instead of hidden mumbo-jumbo and black science, and are presented within an engaging and easy-to-follow book. Additional reference material and case studies help showcase matters to the reader, giving real-world examples to support stated good practices. Naturally, there are many references for even-further reading and research if required.

The book is offered at a very reasonable price, being a somewhat “no-brainer” kind of purchase, when you consider the potential upside and benefits that await the reader. A lot of the advice could even be transferred to a physical sales environment and, of course, your website may not be “transactional” but still it could benefit from much of the authors’ guidance. It certainly punctures a lot of the “BS” offered up by many so-called Internet gurus who burble on about SEO and ranking but don’t get to the real heart of the matter.

Sylvia S. Mader has authored several nationally recognized biology texts published by McGraw Hill. Educated at Bryn Mawr College, Harvard University, Tufts University, and Nova Southeastern University, she holds degrees in both Biology and Education. Over the years she has taught at University of Massachusetts, Lowell; Massachusetts Bay Community College; Suffolk University; and Nathan Mayhew Seminars. Her ability to reach out to science-shy students led to the writing of her first text, Inquiry into Life, that is now in its thirteenth edition. Highly acclaimed for her crisp and entertaining writing style, her books have become models for others who write in the field of biology. Although her writing schedule is always quite demanding, Dr. Mader enjoys taking time to visit and explore the various ecosystems of the biosphere. Her several trips to the Florida Everglades and Caribbean coral reefs resulted in talks she has given to various groups around the country. She has visited the tundra in Alaska, the taiga in the Canadian Rockies, the Sonoran Desert in Arizona, and tropical rain forests in South America and Australia. A photo safari to the Serengeti in Kenya resulted in a number of photographs for her texts. She was thrilled to think of walking in Darwin’s steps when she journeyed to the Galápagos Islands with a group of biology educators. Overly priced for few changes

It should come as no surprise that there are few changes for this edition vs. the older one. My lab partner has the older edition, so at the start of each lab we go page by page to compare the changes. If your teacher allows it, you'd be better off saving money and buying the next oldest edition of this book and just photocopying the missing pages if they have to be turned in.

Price aside, the shipping was quick and it was needed for my biology class. It's not meant as a substitute for an actual textbook, but it does give a pretty decent overview of the concepts discussed that the labs take place on.

This book was required for a course I am taking. It's alright... nothing terribly exciting but does break down basic biology concepts pretty well. If you already know basic high school/college biology and chemistry it's just going to be a review for you.

I gave it 5 stars because I was very pleased with the overall quality and fast arrival. I ordered it standard and it got here in perfect condition about 4 days before a friends book that she had ordered before me from a different seller.

Product displayed was not the product received! For the money I spent on the lab manual it should have at least had the same cover page as shown and should have been spiral bound versus three hole punched and kept together with cloth ribbon tied in a not! My only hope is that when I start the class the contents match was is required for the class labs. Photo of what was actually received supplied.
