Learning to Die in the Anthropocene: Reflections on the End of a Civilization (City Lights Open Media), by Roy Scranton

"In Learning to Die in the Anthropocene, Roy Scranton draws on his experiences in Iraq to confront the grim realities of climate change. The result is a fierce and provocative book."--Elizabeth Kolbert, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Sixth Extinction: An Unnatural History

"Roy Scranton's Learning to Die in the Anthropocene presents, without extraneous bullshit, what we must do to survive on Earth. It's a powerful, useful, and ultimately hopeful book that more than any other I've read has the ability to change people's minds and create change. For me, it crystallizes and expresses what I've been thinking about and trying to get a grasp on. The economical way it does so, with such clarity, sets the book apart from most others on the subject."--Jeff VanderMeer, author of the Southern Reach trilogy

"Roy Scranton lucidly articulates the depth of the climate crisis with an honesty that is all too rare, then calls for a reimagined humanism that will help us meet our stormy future with as much decency as we can muster. While I don't share his conclusions about the potential for social movements to drive ambitious mitigation, this is a wise and important challenge from an elegant writer and original thinker. A critical intervention."--Naomi Klein, author of This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs. the Climate

"Concise, elegant, erudite, heartfelt & wise."--Amitav Ghosh, author of Flood of Fire

"War veteran and journalist Roy Scranton combines memoir, philosophy, and science writing to craft one of the definitive documents of the modern era."--The Believer Best Books of 2015

Coming home from the war in Iraq, US Army private Roy Scranton thought he'd left the world of strife behind. Then he watched as new calamities struck America, heralding a threat far more dangerous than ISIS or Al Qaeda: Hurricane Katrina, Superstorm Sandy, megadrought--the shock and awe of global warming.

Our world is changing. Rising seas, spiking temperatures, and extreme weather imperil global infrastructure, crops, and water supplies. Conflict, famine, plagues, and riots menace from every quarter. From war-stricken Baghdad to the melting Arctic, human-caused climate change poses a danger not only to political and economic stability, but to civilization itself . . . and to what it means to be human. Our greatest enemy, it turns out, is ourselves. The warmer, wetter, more chaotic world we now live in--the Anthropocene--demands a radical new vision of human life.

In this bracing response to climate change, Roy Scranton combines memoir, reportage, philosophy, and Zen wisdom to explore what it means to be human in a rapidly evolving world, taking readers on a journey through street protests, the latest findings of earth scientists, a historic UN summit, millennia of geological history, and the persistent vitality of ancient literature. Expanding on his influential New York Times essay (the #1 most-emailed article the day it appeared, and selected for Best American Science and Nature Writing 2014), Scranton responds to the existential problem of global warming by arguing that in order to survive, we must come to terms with our mortality.

Plato argued that to philosophize is to learn to die. If that’s true, says Scranton, then we have entered humanity’s most philosophical age--for this is precisely the problem of the Anthropocene. The trouble now is that we must learn to die not as individuals, but as a civilization.

Roy Scranton has published in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Rolling Stone, Boston Review, and Theory and Event, and has been interviewed on NPR's Fresh Air, among other media.

Review

More praise for Learning to Die in the Anthropocene:

"Roy Scranton gets it. He knows in his bones that this civilization is over. He knows it is high time to start again the human dance of making some other way to live. In his distinctive and original way he works though a common cultural inheritance, making it something fresh and new for these all too interesting times. This compressed, essential text offers both uncomfortable truths and unexpected joy."--McKenzie Wark, author of Molecular Red: Theory for the Anthropocene

"We're f*cked. We know it. Kind of. But Roy Scranton in this blistering new book goes down to the darkness, looks hard and doesn't blink. He even brings back a few, hard-earned slivers of light. . . . What is philosophy? It's time comprehended in thought. This is our time and Roy Scranton has had the courage to think it in prose that sometimes feels more like bullets than bullet points."--Simon Critchley, Co-founder and moderator of The New York Times online philosophy series "The Stone"

"An eloquent, ambitious, and provocative book."--Rob Nixon, author of Slow Violence and the Environmentalism of the Poor

"Roy Scranton has written a howl for the Anthropocene--a book full of passion, fire, science and wisdom. It cuts deeper than anything that has yet been written on the subject."--Dale Jamieson, author of Reason in a Dark Time: Why the Struggle to Stop Climate Change Failed--And What It Means For Our Future

"As a motivator, the concept Life hasn't been working out so great, hardwired as it is into the post-Neolithic drive to exist no matter what the quality of that existence. Life won't help you to live. Including ecological awareness in our political decisions means including as much death in as many different modes (psychic, philosophical, social) as we can manage. Roy Scranton has written an essential recipe book for adding some death to the bland, oppressive and ecologically disastrous human cake."--Timothy Morton, author of Ecology without Nature: Rethinking Environmental Aesthetics

"In the brief but crowded pages of Learning to Die in the Anthropocene, Iraq War veteran, Roy Scranton, wields both history and philosophy as forensic tools. With the unblinking eyes of a medical examiner, he systematically reveals the causes, trajectory and outcome of our planetary domination and its subsequent climate crisis. Slicing away obscuring adipose tissue of romanticism on the left and denial on the right, he pinpoints the source of the corpse's demise."--Jose Knighton, Weller Book Works' Newsletter

"Scranton has always been a few steps ahead of other veteran-authors. . . . Learning to Die in the Anthropocene casts a beautiful allure."--Peter Molin, Time Now

"Scranton’s book has its own kind of power. . . . There is something cathartic about his refusal to shy away from the full scope of our predicament."--Rebecca Tuhus-Dubrow, The Los Angeles Review of Books

"This is a small book with big ideas from an Army veteran who views the flooding after Hurricane Katrina and sees 'the same chaos and collapse I’d seen in Baghdad.' Scranton brings meaning and humor to the mayhem."--J. Ford Huffman, The Military Times

"With clarity and conviction, Scranton explores the global failure to address the climate crisis and the possibility that the planet could become uninhabitable. Referring to classic texts as far back as The Epic of Gilgamesh, he urges readers to face their fear of death and find guidance in literature as they prepare for and adapt to the future. The book is an unapologetic punch in the gut, likely to leave many readers gasping. Scranton does offer a kind of hope: By making tough accommodations and reconnecting with our core humanity, we may eventually be able to recover our collective breath."--Michael Berry, Sierra Magazine

" . . . Scranton’s book is a very well researched investigation into our troubled future. Scranton doesn’t sugar coat his findings, 'We are f*cked' as he so bluntly puts it. And indeed with the rise in global temperatures set to soar in the next fifty years bringing with it melting ice caps, rising seas, a toxic cocktail of carbon dioxide and methane that has remained locked in the permafrost for centuries, no argument can be made against Scranton’s statement."--Stephen Lee Naish, Hong Kong Review of Books

THE BEST POSSIBLE STARTING PLACE
By D. J Penick
This small and concise book presents the ecological likelihood of our human fate, the blinkered and predatory ways we are dealing with it, the inescapable human reliance of violence in the case of threat, and the lack of any real control in ensuring our continuity . Roy Scranton, a former soldier, has written a deeply thoughtful essay. It is a call to accepting our mortality while working to continue what has been deepest and most enduring in our culture. One may or may not agree with any of the specific arguments here, but there is no doubt that this book places all the crucial issues on the table.

“‘To philosophize is to learn how to die’ … precisely the problem of the Anthropocene” (pp. 20-21)
By R. Russell Bittner
Dale Jamieson, environmental philosopher and the author of REASON IN A DARK TIME: WHY THE STRUGGLE AGAINST CLIMATE CHANGE FAILED—AND WHAT IT MEANS FOR OUR FUTURE writes that “Roy Scranton has written a howl for the Anthropocene—a book full of passion, fire, science and wisdom. It cuts deeper than anything that has yet been written on the subject.” This is high praise coming from a man who’d know—and who wouldn’t dish out that kind of praise lightly.

Scranton sets the stage for global catastrophe already on p. 16 with this quote from the geophysicist, David Archer: “‘(t)he potential for planetary devastation posed by the methane hydrate reservoir … seems comparable to the destructive potential of nuclear winter or from a comet or asteroid impact.” I don’t consider myself an ignoramus on the subject of climate change by any stretch of the imagination – and yet, this mention of a methane reservoir just beneath the floor of the Arctic Ocean came as a complete surprise to me.

And just in case you (or I) thought this sounded rather bleak, Scranton concludes the first section of his monograph with “(f)rom the perspective of many policy experts, climate scientists, and national security officials, the concern is not whether global warming exists or how we might prevent it, but how we are going to adapt to life in the hot, volatile world we’ve created.”

Less debatable is Scranton’s contention on p. 23 that “(c)arbon-fueled capitalism is a zombie system, voracious but sterile. The aggressive human monoculture has proven astoundingly virulent but also toxic, cannibalistic, and self-destructive. It is unsustainable, both in itself and as a response to catastrophic climate change.” Espousing as much is not likely to ‘win friends and influence people’—any more than it’s likely to usher in the next U. S. president. Instead, we’ll all continue to suck on that teat called ‘denial’ right up until the day it runs mysteriously and definitively dry. As Scranton sagely suggests on p. 43, “(n)o population on the planet today is going to willingly trade economic power for lower carbon emissions, especially since economic power remains the key index of global status.”

I could very easily cite the concluding paragraph of Chapter Three (on p. 68) and be done with this review. I think this paragraph sums up the whole issue admirably. But I won’t – conclude my review, that is. I’ll simply quote the paragraph in full and let you consider the measure of its message. “The problem with the People’s Climate March wasn’t really that it lacked a goal, or that it was distracting, superficial, and vacuous. The problem with the United Nations isn’t that the politicians there are ignorant, hidebound, self-interested, or corrupt. The problem with our response to climate change isn’t a problem with passing the right laws or finding the right price for carbon or changing people’s minds or raising awareness. Everybody already knows. The problem is that the problem is too big. The problem is that different people want different things. The problem is that nobody has real answers. The problem is that the problem is us.”

Perhaps the crux of that problem lies here (on p. 77): “(r)estrained aggression keeps people suspicious of collective action and working hard to overcome their fellows, while constant generalized anxiety keeps people servile, unwilling to take risks, and yearning for comfort from whatever quarter, whether the dulling sameness of herd thought or the dumb security of consumer goods.”

In any case, “…our present and future: droughts and hurricanes, refugees and border guards, war for oil, water, gas and food” (p. 82) puts it all in a convenient economy-sized nutshell.

And if you wonder what’s to be done… “The enemy isn’t out there somewhere—the enemy is ourselves. Not as individuals, but as a collective. A system. A hive” (p. 85).

Scranton’s monograph (the subtitle of which is “Reflections on the End of a Civilization”) is as clarion a call to arms as any I can think of. In her review of LEARNING TO DIE…, Naomi Klein (whose book THE SHOCK DOCTRINE I read and reviewed at this same Website in May of 2013) termed Scranton’s book “a critical intervention.” Although Ms. Klein concludes her own book on an optimistic note, I’m fairly certain that Roy Scranton’s concluding notes will not be in a similarly major key.

If the urgent suggestion of one ageing Boomer is worth anything to the Gen Xers, Millennials and any other subsequent generations that might still take this raging bull by the horns and try to tame it, I implore you to buy and read this book—and then do something, collectively, with what you take away from that read.

In the meantime, you might do well to heed Roy Scranton’s narrative advice: “(t)hrough the ice ages of the past and into the long summer of the Holocene we carried tools, furs, fire, and our greatest treasure and most potent adaptive technology, the only thing that might save us in the Anthropocene, because it is the only thing that can save those who are already dead: memory (p. 95) … The record of that wisdom, the heritage of the dead, is our most valuable gift to the future” (p. 99).

And yet, does any of it really matter? “The causality behind our human bloom is the same causality behind rainfall, quasars, and the roll of the dice” (p. 113). Perhaps, at the end of the day, all that really matters is that Roy Scranton can choose to warn us, we can choose (or not) to heed his warning, and we can then choose (or not) to roll the dice.

A surprisingly beautiful rumination on the inevitable extinction of humanity
By Nathan Webster
I read this twice before I felt satisfied I could really connect with Roy Scranton's ruminations - but once that switch clicked, I recognized this as about the most beautiful rumination on humanity's eventual extinction that we're likely to read.

It's easy to call this a "climate change" book, but Scranton's narrative does a good job connecting this to geologic history, not the comparitive split second of recent human history. Climate change IS going to happen, humanity in its current form WILL be destroyed - there's no point in crying about it. Not tomorrow, obviously, but eventually. But, it's fairly likely that the children of today's children will be facing a world where much we take for granted has been dramatically changed.

So Scranton is not writing this book as a "drive fewer miles" polemic - as he points out, our reliance on technology burns more fossil fuel in a few minutes than worrying about driving 55 or 65 mph. He is writing literally to wake humanity up to how to learn how to die - because it's coming. We, as humans, are biologically hard-wired to avoid confronting our own personal mortality - much less confront it as a species. He doesn't have any answers as to what we should do, but be more enlightened as to our place in the world, and how we can prepare to adjust to an existential conclusion.

It's funny - candidates for president babble about ISIS as an "existential threat" to the US - it isn't, and will never be. ISIS terrorists could blow up Houston, but the country would survive. In the meantime, an existential threat is happening all around us, every day, and it's denied at every turn. It's just humans being humans - worrying about the broken window in a car with no tires.

So in this book - really, an extended essay - Scranton, without pity or much melodrama, lays out the case that we had our moment, and now that moment is coming to an end. Not in 10 years or 50 years or 150 years - but it's coming, and the by-then long dead and disintegrated Scranton will have the words left behind to say "I told you so."

To paraphrase another column that defends the "pessimism" that a book like this seems to encourage: "We’re not diagnosing cancer because we’re pessimistic – we’re pessimistic because our diagnosis is that this is cancer."

In other words - it's not pessimism to try and convince people that climate change is the problem. The pessimism comes because climate change IS the problem.

GM-Crop Cultivation - Ecological Effects on a Landscape Scale: Proceedings of the Third GMLS Conference 2012 in Bremen (Theorie in der &Oum

After two successful meetings on the ecological implications of GM-crop cultivation in 2008 and 2010, the authors felt encouraged to carry out a follow-up conference in 2012. GMLS III highlights recent scientific developments in the analysis of risks in the agricultural use of genetically modified plants. While in some countries a GM-based agriculture has been largely established, other regions of the world continue cultivation of conventional varieties only. This acknowledges a persistent reservation of the public towards GMO products. The overall need of an emphasis in independent studies becomes continuously more obvious. Experts from Europe, United States, Ghana and Argentina report their scientific results and experience with ecological, socio-economical and administrative implications.

Love these books!
By Holly B Wuflestad
My husband and son are huge fans of Theodore Boone. Grisham has done a great job of transitioning to a voice that the younger audience can connect to. The situations are real and the characters deal with them honestly. The plot is interesting and does not resolve quickly or easily. They have learned a lot about the legal world and how it impacts the everyday life.

Page turning novel; A great addition to the series
By Jonathan
First and foremost, I am a teenager who has read every book of this series.

I've been keeping an eye on the release date of this book for a couple months after getting my hands on the third installment of this series. Amazon was really quick and arrived on the day it was released (preordered).

Overall, I did like the novel, giving it a sold B+. It included some modern topics that are currently being debated. It doesn't follow the previous installments where Theo Boone focuses on Pete Duffy and the murder case; it was very refreshing and showed Theo's continued strength to fight for what he thinks is right.

The book includes politics (it will become very obvious), environmental issues, and the shady business Mr.Boone does. It does get a little bit bloody halfway through, but I felt the ending was a bit rushed and wished the ending could be a bit better. I was surprised Theo knew what "eminent domain" is, but has no idea where tax dollars go, basic economy, or what an "activist" is. Simply put, it's glaringly unrealistic.

The book is pretty good. I cannot wait for the fifth installment.

Rather Slow Starter But Okay After That
By bames
This book is the fourth book of the Theodore Boone Series. The series is all about Theo who is the only child of two lawyers. His father is an estate lawyer and his mother is a divorce lawyer. Theo loves the law and plans to be a famous trial lawyer some day. He loves the law so much that he has his own small "law office" within his parents' offices. He gives advice and helps out friends as much as he can.

In this fourth book of the series, Theo is faced with a problem that has something to do with budgets. He is very sad to learn that budget cuts are forcing his school to make certain changes. But, as there are cutbacks on one hand, the town council is considering voting on a project that will cost $200 million dollars. To make things much more worrisome, Theo's friend Hardie asks him whether the government can simply take the land that has been in his family for almost a century just to build something.

As he and his friends are spending some time fishing on the property that Hardie's family calls their own, his dog Judge gets brutally attacked by men who claim to be surveyors. They even shoved one of the boys and was rough with Theo himself. Judge is lucky to be alive and Theo's parents take the men to Animal Court for cruelty.

Theo has to explain about eminent domain and I have to admit that the explanation is clear and easy to understand especially for young children. The concept of acting on something that kids passionately care about is well presented.

However, the story starts out rather slowly. It only picks-up after an incident at the Quinn property which is pretty far into the book.

Awful, Simply Awful!
By Crabby Magnolia
If I could give this particular edition of The Wise Woman zero stars, I would. It is a travesty and an insult to George MacDonald. The editing is pure garbage. The woman depicted on the cover is so far from reflecting anything even remotely resembling the Wise Woman of MacDonald's story that I attempted to cover it with my own illustration. I abandoned my attempt when I discovered the dreadful hack job the publisher had made of the material inside the book. I give this edition a hearty BOO!!!!!

We All Need the Wise Woman in Our Lives
By Ms. G
My sister-in-law recently told me about George MacDonald, the author of this book--a Scottish author born in the mid 1850's. His writings influenced authors such as C.S. Lewis and Tolkien. I really enjoyed reading many of the works of C.S. Lewis, so upon learning about MacDonald, I was curious but felt maybe his fairy tales wouldn't be to my liking. Nevertheless, I respected my relative's recommendation, bought this title and soon found myself deeply enjoying the stories. It was easy reading and contained wonderful life lessons valuable down through the ages. I think it is suitable for young and old alike. I felt very satisfied when I finished reading it and wondered why hadn't I known about this author before!!

Pathetically sloppy printing job
By Mary Silver
I do not hate the book itself, but rather the slovenly binding and printing job. It seems the publisher took an old print copy, photocopied it, and slapped it into a magazine-like format. It's pretty ugly and troubled by typos, random hyphens, and other signs of not caring.

Review
"Uncovering the Logic of English will be really helpful for teaching reading to children who are mathematical pattern thinkers..."

--Temple Grandin author of Thinking in Pictures

"Uncovering the Logic of English" is a thoughtful guide for anyone who wants to understand language better or is looking for advice to help them teach it." --Midwest Book Review

"A gem of a book... This is a very useful book for teachers, parents and anyone interested in bringing the joy of reading to our nation's children." --Dr Reid Lyon

"The "thrust" of this book might be better described if the title was changed to The Heartbreak of English: a Logical Means of Recovery." --Retired 3M Engineer

From the Back Cover
"English is so illogical!"

It is generally believed that English is a language of exceptions. For many, learning to spell and read is frustrating. For some, it is impossible... especially for the 29% of Americans who are functionally illiterate.

  • But what if the problem is not the language itself, but the rules we were taught? What if we could see the complexity of English as a powerful tool rather than a hindrance?
Uncovering the Logic of English challenges the notion that English is illogical by systematically explaining English spelling and answering questions like "Why is there a silent final E in have, large, and house?" and "Why is discussion spelled with -sion rather than -tion?" With easy-to-read examples and anecdotes, this book describes:
  • the phonograms and spelling rules which explain 98% of English words
  • how English words are formed and how this knowledge can revolutionize vocabulary development
  • how understanding the reasons behind English spelling prevents students from needing to guess.
The author's inspiring commentary makes a compelling case that understanding the logic of English could transform literacy education and help solve America's literacy crisis. Thorough and filled with the latest linguistic and reading research Uncovering the Logic of English demonstrates why this approach should be as foundational to our education system as 1+1=2.

The Heartbreak of English
By Jack
Uncovering the Logic of English
Written by Denise Eidi
Reviewed - March 2011

The "thrust" of this book might be better described if the title was changed to THE HEARTBREAK OF ENGLISH: and a Logical Means of Recovery.

The Heart (the will, the intellect and the emotions) of this book will be addressed rather than the mechanics. The reason is that it was my heart that was touched first and foremost as I began to read.

Let me give a little background. I was at the L'Abri Conference 2011 held in Rochester MN (February 11 - 12) when an announcement was made that Denise Eide was available in the lobby to discuss her new book. When I found her table, stacked high with copies of her book, she was deeply engrossed in a conversation with others - so I pressed the money into her hand, smiled and strode off with a copy of Uncovering the Logic of English. A few hours later I began to read...

A deep well of pain and humiliation was tapped - with tears flowing I read on and on. Just so you know; I am a retired Electrical Engineer, I'm 70 years old and those that know me best might say I'm as tough as nails. I, like most boys, think logically and literally and we do not tolerate inconsistent rules. Try as I might, I cannot come up with a description of what I experienced as a boy in school when trying to read, write and spell. Currently I work with several young men at the Middle School and I am drawn to them because they are "gear heads" -- they have the "knack". Check out this one minute video to see what I mean... The next day I returned to Denise and her table of books. As she finished up her conversation with another visitor she turned to me, "How can I help you?" she asked. "I've been reading your book," I said. Then she looked into my eyes and "she knew." I remember very little of our conversation... At one point she asked me to write a review of her book - because I "got it" ...from the heart.

So here we go Denise Eide... I hope you like it.

Shown below are excerpts from the first 30 pages (and one from page 63). Notice the words that show up in these excerpts - misled, abandon, puzzle, stripping the power of the code, frustrations, the illiterate blame themselves, discouraged hearts, confused minds, then they lost interest in reading.

The quotes are distributed over numerous pages of the book. However, notice how powerful they are when pulled together and can be read one right after another -- the message, taken from this book, speaks deeply to me.

This history has misled many people to believe that English no longer follows patterns ...

The keepers of this knowledge remain a few reading centers, literacy specialists, dyslexia institutes and researchers. Experts in these fields know that all children who are presented with the whole picture of English, combined with solid methods, can succeed. Nevertheless, "intensive phonics" is often taught only as a last resort to those who have the resources to hire special tutors.

Why would we abandon our young students to solve a master puzzle like English on their own?

When we teach sight words, we are effectively stripping the power of the code and asking students to memorize visual symbols for each word.

... we all have unanswered questions and frustrations with English. The difference between the literate and the illiterate is that the literate blame the problems on English, but the illiterate blame themselves.

The problem is that we cannot know what we were never taught.

Researchers have demonstrated that all children who are not severely brain-damaged are able to learn to read English when taught correctly.

Children who are skilled readers have effective brain activity patterns and rely heavily on areas of their brains related to sounds. When struggling readers attempt to read, their brains show inactivity in these critical auditory areas.

When reading is not taught correctly, many students do not make solid connection between phonograms (the pictures of the sounds) and phonemes (the sounds themselves). Instead, they seem to rely heavily on the visual center of their brain. Given the combination of the opaque nature of the English code combined with teaching methods that emphasize the visual, this is not surprising. For students who happen to be auditory or kinesthetic learners instead of visual learners, the effect can be debilitating.

Countless highly educated professionals rely heavily on spell check... Many adults need to guess multiple times... sometimes abandoning the perfect word choice due to their inability to look it up.

Most programs teach that [s] has one sound /s/.
When incomplete phonics is taught, students who think more logically and literally decode [is] and [his] as /is/ and /his/ rather than /iz/ and /hiz/.

It is important to understand that these students are not wrong; they are doing exactly what they were told to do.

Logical/literal students are our future engineers, mathematicians and scientists. ...they quickly discover that most of the S's do not say /s/. In fact, most of the letters do not sound anything like they were told. This short-circuits their logical minds. Many of these students become discouraged by English.

Most boys think logically and literally.

Logical students do not tolerate inconsistent rules.

At a time in history when our economy relies on advancements in science and engineering, we cannot afford to impair these gifted citizens by not teaching them English in a manner that respects how their minds work.

... countless professionals... If they can learn advanced mathematics, physics, chemistry, business structures, and even other languages, they can easily learn the 104 pieces that explain English.

Incomplete phonics leaves a lot of holes, discouraged hearts, confused minds, and a seemingly unlimited number of exceptions.

...good readers are actually processing the sounds one at a time... they are converting the letters on the page to sounds.

The use of intensive phonics is the only way to teach dyslexics and learning disabled individuals how to read and is the best way for everyone to learn to read.

My logically and literally minded students consistently applied the only silent final E rule I taught them - "The vowel says its name because of the E" - until they proved to themselves and to me that I was wrong. Then they lost interest in reading.

In conclusion I encourage you to read this book and I'm sure you will come to appreciate the potential for redeeming those that are shattered and heartbroken. Then begin to place copies of the book into the hands of those that can help - parents, teachers and countless adults that "cannot know what we were never taught."

A Solution for Illiteracy....finally!
By Amazon Customer
Denise Eide has successfully answered the oft quoted, and false statement that "English spelling is inconsistent, illogical, and, for some, impossible." She has taken a complex subject, made it understandable, and provided a step by step process to teach ANYONE to read proficiently. There is no longer any excuse for a student schooled in America, whether at home or in a public or private setting, not to learn to read with comprehension by the time they complete first grade. There can no longer be any reason that a middle school student, or an adult who was mis-taught cannot be rescued and re-taught to read proficiently.

Who needs to read and understand and apply the irrefutable information in "Uncovering the Logic of English?"

* Professors in every college of education where elementary school teachers are being prepared to teach kindergarten, first, and second graders to read. Today, the overwhelming "philosophy" of reading instruction is based on the false and harmful belief that students learn to read the way they learn to speak. NOT SO...learning to read is a skill to be learned, just like one learns to play the piano, or the harp, or build a house. It requires a step by step set of rules that must be mastered if one is become a good pianist, or harpist, or carpenter.

* Reading "coaches" and "reading supervisors" and "kindergarten, first, second, and third grade teachers. Sad to say, the giant publishing companies in America (four of which control 75% of the textbook market) print what they think teachers will buy. They do not care that the information presented is not based on decades of research. They do not measure the methods of instruction against what works....thus, school districts spend billions on textbooks that are dutifully used by untrained, but well intentioned teachers. And so, our illiteracy rates in America continue to burgeon each year...students are placed in Special Education, or drop out of school, or are underachievers, simply because they are not taught the basic logic of the English language.

* Home School Moms, are probably the most well educated and savvy of all the teachers in America because they are not saddled with the false teaching "strategies" of whole language. There are other products being successfully used that can be used to teach a student to read, but "Uncovering the Logic of English" is one of the best, simplest to use, and most inexpensive teaching tool available today.

* Education writers in popular periodicals or news outlets need to read this book. It will provide a basis for offering "a solution" the next time another report is released noting the poor student reading achievement that has lulled Americans into a trance of inaction, and continues to plunge countless students into a lifetime of greatly limited possibilities.

* TV and Radio Talk Show hosts often pontificate about the low achievement of students in our schools, but usually offer no alternative solutions. This book offers some excellent "one liners" that can be quoted like: there are a "finite number of tools that unlock the mystery of 98% of the words in the English language. When these 104 tools are presented, all students can succeed." Or, there are "26 letters in the English alphabet, that represent 44 sounds, and there are 74 ways to spell those sounds and 30 "rules" that when applied make complete sense out of learning English. If these tools are learned, and they CAN be learned, in first grade for most, and no later than third grade for 95 % of students, then they can read what they can talk about and understand. No problem with comprehension either.

* Everyone else who cares about the unacceptable illiteracy rate in America should read this book. You will find, as I did, that there are many helpful, interesting, and practical "rules of the road" that you will find fascinating as you explore your language.

There is no magic involved here. It is simply applying what has been known since "Hornbooks," the "New England Primer," or Noah Webster's "Blue Backed Speller" were used to teach a nation to read proficiently, with fluency and comprehension.

As my colleague Dr. Reid Lyon, Director of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development says: "Denise Eide has written a gem of a book that brings light to the way in which words are read and spelled. This is a very useful book for teachers, parents and anyone interested in bringing the joy of reading to our nation's children."

The secrets that the reading professionals charge for!
By marshck
I met Denise Eide at a convention in Cincinnati, Ohio, last year. My then 8yo son had just been diagnosed with dyslexia, and was meeting weekly with a professional tutor. My older children had learned to read without much effort, but weren't the greatest spellers, and after all the upheaval, I was frustrated with the reading curriculum to which we had been so faithful. I felt like it had failed us! I went to Denise's seminar about teaching wiggly children, and I sat in the back of the room, scribbling furiously, trying to write down every word she said. I couldn't believe that I had found a book that taught everything that our (very expensive!) private tutor was teaching! I ended up purchasing not only Uncovering the Logic of English, but the whole Essentials curriculum, which I am now using successfully with my 7yo, and we are beta testing the soon-to-be-released Foundations curriculum with my 5yo.

Uncovering the Logic of English is not a long, heavy, textbook that feels overwhelming to look at. It's much more like a concise, readable handbook. I had to slow myself down because I wanted to absorb everything at the first sitting! The hard copy of the book that I purchased at the convention is underlined, marked up and highlighted, and I couldn't believe how many simple rules I had missed when I was in school.

When I spoke to her at her booth, Denise told me that this book teaches in the detailed, methodical way that struggling readers are taught, which is true to our experience with the private tutor. She said that she had always wondered why we don't teach everyone the rules and strategies that we reserve for kids who are already behind. Doesn't it make sense that if students learn the right way when they are starting out, there will be fewer who fall behind?
