Mongolia in the Twentieth Century, by Stephen Kotkin, Bruce Allen Elleman

The remote vastness of Mongolia has remained somewhat of a mystery to most Westerners - no less so in the 20th century. Homeland of the legendary conqueror Chingiz Khan, in modern times Mongolia itself has been the object of imperial rivalry. For most of the 20th century it was under Soviet domination. Mikhail Gorbachev began the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Mongolia in 1989, a process completed in 1992. By 1996 a coalition of opposition parties triumphed in national elections, and Mongolia launched itself on a new course. It is perhaps the most intriguing of the post-community "transition" societies. This volume examines Mongol history over the past century, embracing not only Mongolia proper but also Mongol communities in Russia and China. Contributions, based on new archival research and the latest fieldwork, are from the world's top experts in the field - including four authors from Mongolia and others from Japan, Russia, Taiwan, Great Britain and the United States. Stephen Kotkin's introductory chapter is an overview of Mongol studies. The essays in part 1 examine Sino-Russian competition over Outer Mongolia. Part 2 looks at international diplomacy in Mongolia, including the role of Japan. Part 3 focuses on contemporary issues ranging from economic and cultural change to emergent elites. A concluding essay surveys Mongolian foreign policy.

Informative in some aspects
By A Customer
I was hoping for something that explained more of the current social and cultural conditions of Mongolia. The title of this book is somewhat misleading, this book is a concise history of Foreign politics imposed on Mogolia and the conditions of foriegn relations with Mongolia, but it does not seem to say much about the attitudes of the Mongolians. This book would be good to cite in a history essay.

Impressive introduction
By Joe6Pack
It is rare to find edited volumes which are so well organized and form a coherent nalaytical narrative. Three major themes: Mongolia's relations with Imperial China. They show how the colonizing policies of the late Qing dynasty in Inner Mongolia pushed Outer Mongolia into the arms the Russians. Second, how Outer Mongolia which by 1922 had become a Soviet satellite tried to survive the triple power rivalry between Soviet Russia, the Republic of China and Imperial Japan (the latter promoting pan-Mongolia). Yet hopes after joining the Soviet attack on Japan in the latter days of WWII in order to unify with Inner Mongolia failed. The final part deals the transformation of contemporary Mongolia, the situation of mongolian minoritiesin Russia and China, and with its current foreign relations, notably its reorietation towards the West, that is: the US and Japan, which are the morst responsive, without antagonizing its two powerful neighbors.
If there is any criticism, than Mongolia's current economic na dpolitical transformations remains somewhat sketchy. Also the quality of maps leaves the reader somewhat hazy at times(e.g. when there are references to Mongolian minorities outside the country)

Saving Kate, by K. Sterling, Abigail Graves

Kate Preston is hiding. She hides behind bright pink hair, tattoos, baggy t-shirts and oversized cardigans. She hides her quietly successful career as an author of really filthy gay erotica and pretends to be just another soccer mom. She hides in the day to day routine of being a single mother to a busy twelve year old. Then a bizarre attack at a grocery store lands Kate in the arms of just the sort of fireman she's fantasized about.

Connor Worthing (fireman from Kate's fantasies) is in the right place at the right time to provide first aid to his secret soccer mom crush after she's injured during a ridiculous brawl. Once he's held Kate in his arms, he's determined to make her his.

“Can you find someone to watch Mabel?” He asked and Kate nodded. “Great. I want to keep you out really late,” he said softly and Kate nodded again. Wait. She frowned and shook her head.
“I don’t know if that’s a good idea,” she mumbled and Connor sighed heavily as he set his coffee on the table.
“Why?” He asked as he took her cup and set it next to his. Kate would have scooted back but his arm slid around her waist.
“I told you,” she said as she leaned back and Connor followed. She set her hands against his chest and for some reason, she didn’t have the strength to push him away. Her fingers pressed and he felt impossibly solid beneath his clothes and Kate’s heart raced. She licked her lips and Connor growled softly as his head tilted toward hers. “I’m in a very different place. You’d be better off with someone with a lot less baggage,” she said breathlessly as Connor’s forehead rested against hers.
“Do you want to spend time with me?” He asked and Kate nodded. It was all she was good for at the moment. “Do you want to go to dinner with me tonight?” She nodded again.
“Are you always this pushy?” She asked and Connor laughed.
“Never. Just with you. I think it’s because you’re so stubborn and won’t let anyone do anything for you,” he admitted and Kate had nothing to say to that as Connor’s hand slid around her jaw. “You have no idea how badly I wanted to kiss you yesterday,” he murmured as his lips brushed against hers.
“Why didn’t you?”
“I try not to take advantage of women with head injuries, as a rule,” he whispered and Kate hummed in agreement.
“My head is fine now. Mostly,” Kate mumbled and she felt his lips curve.
“I’m so glad,” he said. “That’s why I’m going to kiss you and you’re going to let me take you out tonight,” Connor stated before his tongue swept along her lower lip. Heat radiated from Kate’s lip and spread though her body as Connor groaned. His tongue traced her upper lip and the heat settled between Kate’s thighs and she gasped. “Jesus. Is that birthday cake?” He asked hoarsely and it took Kate a moment. She nodded and Connor’s mouth crashed into hers as he eased her onto her back.
Kate’s arms wrapped around his neck and her hands fisted in his hair as his tongue swept between her lips and thrust against hers. Her pulse throbbed deep in her core and Kate clamped her thighs together as slick heat seeped into her panties. Connor angled his head and the kiss became urgent and Kate moaned as the hand around her waist slid to her stomach. She felt the rough heat of his hand against her skin and her leg wrapped around his hip without any conscious direction. Kate’s nerves fizzed anxiously as she waited for his hand to move higher. But it didn’t. She opened her eyes and he was watching her. Waiting for permission. There was another burst of heat within Kate and between her legs and she nodded frantically as she pulled his lips hard against hers.

And.......she does it again!
By Swaffy67
Any time K. Sterling drops a book, I immediately stop reading what I'm currently in to so I can read her new book. Yes, she's that good. I absolutely love her writing style - it just clicks with me. I think because my sense of humor is similar and I get her jokes and references. K. Sterling has a unique talent: she is able to write a story that causes you to run through several emotions, you get a physical reaction from reading her books. As this is the first hetero book of hers I have read, I was concerned at first, but my concern was totally unwarranted. This is a beautiful story of loss, strength, devotion, laughter, fear, lust, discovery and acceptance. SPOILER ALERT*******You can relate to both Kate and Connor. There is something poignant about these two people, living a day to day existence, grasping for something and not knowing what it is until they find each other and realize what was missing. I do have to say, these two were smoking hot in the bedroom and I liked how open they both were, especially Connor (yes, the hotel scene was a particular favorite of mine and I did laugh out loud because the reactions were exactly what you would expect). They were equals and they accepted that, there was no power play, only mutual respect and willingness to accept the others flaws. Connor is a loving, considerate man who adored Kate's beat to a different drummer. Kate didn't try to be anyone else, she had the "take me as I am or find the door" attitude, which was refreshing. Was it karmic fate? Who knew a frozen turkey would cause a shift in the universe and bring these two together. I loved Mabel as well, I think because my teenage daughter is similar with a quick wit, an old soul and lots of compassion. We can only hope to find a relationship like that, it's beautiful to read and I find myself jealous. Take the time to read this book, I promise you will not be disappointed.

Dynamic lovable characters, and wonderful hope !
By D.Hart, RCIS
Terrific romance about a Firefighter and an M/M Romance writer !! Fabulous Firefighter, Connor, meets free-spirited, lively Romance writer, Kate at the grocery store. Kate has a cute 12 Yr. old, -going on 40, and we like these characters immediately. Kate's husband died as a war hero six years ago, and she's not been with anyone since. Connor takes her home after her concussion (funny) and again shows up the next day. Each one is drawn to the other in this adorable, fresh, delightful romance ! It seems so effortless and normal. We get a well written story, amazing characters and hot sexiness, what more do we need ?! I liked Connor, and the fact that he didn't try to worm into Mabel's space right away, and kudos to Kate for keeping things separate. Kate is three years older than Connor, but he's infatuated and not going anywhere. Their first mattress marathon was erotic, sensual, as well as raw and powerful. Great storytelling, dynamic people and wonderful hope. Connor has a (good) secret, but all is not revealed right away because Kate didn't want to know too much personal stuff, in case it didn't work out. They do get to know each other better, and we get more awesome sex, a first time for Connor GIVING anal. He is a fun guy... yet naïve about some sex, but he catches on, because Kate is totally on board with all the sexy times. She does write hot romance, or fluffy porn as someone called it. Every time she throws him a hardball, he catches it, and he's definitely required to be on his toes.
Highly recommending this terrific tale ! ENJOY !

Elements of Pattern Theory (Johns Hopkins Studies in the Mathematical Sciences), by Ulf Grenander

Although pattern and image analysis have their conceptual foundations in the mathematical sciences, it is now applied widely in many other areas of science. It embodies the techniques used to evaluate and compare the patterns, shapes, and other images―natural and artificial―that may range from such electronic forms as CAT scans and satellite images to patterns as ancient as the non-random assembly of letters that comprise a language.

In Patterns Ulf Grenander has written a book both for the student of mathematics and for the specialist who works with patterns in other fields, such as biology and medicine. Grenander begins by examining the nature of patterns and what distinguishes them from randomness. He then provides the mathematical foundation for the concepts and phenomena introduced. Finally, he provides examples and demonstrations of computer algorithms that permit the reader to recreate and explore some of the patterns discussed in the book.

"A dazzling tour de force on patterns. It is a substantial, original contribution by a leader―indeed, originator―in the field, and has the potential for significant impact on the direction of future research. It includes a profoundly insightful treatise on patterns, their nature, and the role of randomness in generating and analyzing them. Examples range from language to weaving to cellular biology. Even non-statisticians and non-scientists reading this material will find their thoughts clarified and provoked."―Alan F. Karr, National Institute of Statistical Sciences

Aikido and the Harmony of Nature, by Mitsugi Saotome

Here is a unique approach to the teachings of the Founder of Aikido, Morihei Ueshiba, as interpreted by his direct student of fifteen years. Mitsugi Saotome examines the spiritual philosophy of the Founder, the warrior ideals of feudal Japan as the basis of his martial arts philosophy, and the scientific principles underlying the philosophy of Aikido technique.

The author shows that the physical movement of Aikido is the embodiment of principles of the spirit. Negative force is not countered with aggression but is controlled and redirected through the power and balance of spiral movement. This is the shape of Aikido and the dynamic shape at the foundation of all energies of existence. Aikido movement can only be understood from its roots in universal law and the processes of nature. The sincere practice and study of Aikido deepens our appreciation for the perfection of nature's balance and brings us back into harmony with our environment, other people, and ourselves.

Abundantly illustrated with the author's drawings, diagrams, and calligraphies, as well as photographs demonstrating Aikido techniques, the book also offers a history of Aikido, personal anecdotes about the Founder, and translations of several of his lectures.

"Aikido and the Harmony of Nature reveals the profound philosophical and ethical principles embodied in the art of Aikido and relates those principles to the laws of nature. It is among the clearest, deepest, and most inspiring books ever written on Aikido or, for that matter, on any martial art."—Susan Perry, Editor-in-Chief, Aikido Today magazine

Aikido and the Harmony of Nature
By Spider Monkey
I'm sorry to be the voice of dissent with my review but I found `Aikido and the Harmony of Nature' to be a disappointing read, maybe all the more so after reading the other glowing reviews here. This book looks at Aikido philosophy and links it into themes of nature. The premise sounds great but it struggles hard to actually do it in practise. You get lots of spurious illustrations of aikido throws with swirling arrows that spin around strands of DNA, atoms or solar flares (for example), but these bare little relevance to both the text or the philosophy itself. They look like they mean something and are deeply profound or spiritual, but on closer analysis they really aren't. Whilst it's true that the spherical motion of Aikido techniques can find a mirror in nature, this book struggles to tie them together in any coherent or meaningful way. There is also far too much talk of God (although Saotome does specify that he doesn't mean any particular God) and how Aikido links you with him when Aikido is a non religious martial art, although it is deeply spiritual. The sections that recount the authors training with O Sensei are fascinating to read and some of the philosophy makes for interesting reading, although it tends to ramble after a while. If you are looking for a book on Aikido philosophy then I'd suggest you start with the excellent `Spirit of Aikido' by Kisshomaru Ueshiba and then come to this one way, way down the line. Some interesting parts and some of the photography redeemed this book from being a total washout, but it could have delivered so much more.

Brunel: The Man Who Built the World, by Steven Brindle

One of the great minds of the 19th century, Isambard Kingdom Brunel was responsible for some of the most impressive engineering feats of his day. By the age of 26, he had been appointed chief engineer of the Great Western Railway, linking Bristol to London. His love of steamships led him to build a series of revolutionary vessels, including the Great Britain--the first steamship to cross the Atlantic. Illustrated with a wealth of blueprints, drawings, and rare photographs, celebrated British television personality Jeremy Clarkson's new biography tracks the life and achievements of this Victorian-era genius. A fascinating portrait of ambition and innovation, Clarkson's book provides ample evidence to support the claim that Brunel was indeed "the man who built the world."

From Publishers Weekly
The title, at first, seems impossibly hyperbolic, because it is: Isambard Kingdom Brunel did not, in fact, build the world. However, the things he did build-steamships, bridges, tunnels, train stations-are staggering feats that continue to influence civil engineering today. This book's strength lies in its well thought-out organization: rather than a play-by-play recount of Brunel's life and times, the author organizes chapters according to different genres of his work, separating, for instance, railways from bridges and "The Three Great Ships." Exquisite historical photos, including elegantly rendered fold-out illustrations depicting the plan Brunel drew for the Thames Tunnel, give remarkable insight into the mind of the engineer and his preparation for the project. But, as evidenced by the book's overblown subtitle, the writing suffers lapses into hyperbole: "Brunel's genius had conceived her, his charisma had foisted this vision onto his dazzled contemporaries, including Scott Russell, and lured the money out of their pockets," Brindle writes of the steamship Great Eastern. Brindle, ever the steadfastly enthusiastic guide, in loading this book with illustrations and reproductions, has given engineers and history buffs much to appreciate. 100 color illustrations, 50 b/w photos.

Brunel, his life
By Amazon Customer
This is an excellent book giving a most comprehensive and well illustrated account of the man and his work. It seems to have become rare, having only been published for a few years. Thus it was difficult to obtain a copy. I bought one for myself immediately it was published and was so impressed by the book that I wished to buy a copy as a present. I could only find one in the U.S.A.
Amazon is a good source of out-of-print books and can be recommended.
