Good book even though it comes up short in some areas...

I wanted to read this book ever since seeing the infomercial of Scott doing his thing on tv. I couldn't afford or justify the expense to buy the big commerical package so this book had to do. The methods are easy to follow and Mr. Flansburg does a good job expressing his mind set in how he mentally did the problems. The basic addition and multiplications methods are good but the examples were insufficient when dealing with mixed numbers of different lengths. There were also exceptions to many of the rules that weren't expressed. Finally, the last part of the book with special rules were so numerious it would take a year to effectively learn and apply them all from memory. This leads me to believe that Mr. Flansburg didn't tell everything he knows, like the quick way to determine change -- by changing say ten bucks to 9.99 and subtracting that from the amount owed; then add one cent to get the correct change. It's easier to subtract 9 since its the highest value you can have in each column. This was presented by him on a night time radio show he was a guest on. I do give him prasie for getting people young and old to stop depending on calculators and learn mental speed math.

a good place to start learing mental math

This book does not give a system of how to use the the various short cuts.It does not say when and where each short cut is most useful.Thereby,trying to remember all or any of them leads to confusion.However,i found the chapters on "using zeroes to hold places", addition,subtraction,and "cross multiplication" to be superb!If you are a concerned parent,student ,or adult ; i recommend SPEED MATHEMATICS SIMPLIFIED by edward stoddard as the most comprehensive manual of shortcut math available anywhere! Learn the simple truths about the japanese and german approach to basic arithmetic . Then on the opposite side of the coin(READING) i recommend :HOW TO READ A BOOK ,by mortimer adler /charles van doren.

This book is terrible

Anyone who has seriously attempted to use Scott Flansburg math strategies will find out that his methods simply do not work outside of the examples in his book. The problem solving techniques are engineered to work only with the examples that he supplied. For instance, in his chapter on solving cubed roots, his method will work for the exercises in the book, however when I applied these to real world numbers, his methods flat out failed. Hey Scott, try solving the cubed root of these numbers 11111111 or even 123456 using the method described on page 153 - your methods are flawed.

This is a terrific publication, if your into tube audio this is the book you need. I have volume two as well. Both books are really well set out, going from basic electrical theory to how tubes an associated circuits work. Igor Popovich has an excellent way of explaining even the more complex designs. I have built some of the tube amplifiers from these books with fantastic results. I could not speak more highly of this book and would recommend both publications to anyone who has an interest in the wonderful world of tube audio.

I have bought both volume 1 & 2 and am about half way through the first volume. It is a very thorough book without going over the top. Everything follows a logical progression from basic electronic theory to components to general audio amplifiers to fundamentals of vacuum tube operation & so on. It does assume a basic understanding of electronics & high school mathematics, but that's enough to work through & build up your knowledge. Richly illustrated, with lots of real life tube circuitry & explanations on how they work. Not a book for absolute beginners, but not too overly technical to totally discourage you either! He completely covers his subject over the 2 volumes & I would recommend these to anyone who is serious in learning how these wonderful amplifies work!

Best thing I have ever spent my money on hands down!

This item is a MUST in the tax and accounting fields if you want to stay abreast the current tax laws. The authors even invite the reader to use their online website periodically to keep an eye on current tax laws which might be changing after the book is published which is especially helpful. The only downside to this book is when I researched one topic in particular, the 8862 or claiming the earned income credit after disallowance, it was silent on the matter and didn't acknowledge it at all. But for the money I spent on a used version of this book, I am not complaining one bit. If you think that the book omitting this particular topic is a sure sign of other basic tax laws also not included, you would be wrong. It is surprising but again, there is so much tax information jammed packed into this book, I'm actually surprised that more hasn't been left out. It has answered years worth of questions and even helped me win several audits for my clients because of unknown or not widely known tax rules and regulations that benefit taxpayers.

I have had one of these every year since 1987

I work in corporate taxes full time and have access to a complete library of tax materials at work. I use this guide at home for my personal tax return and those of family and friends that I am requested to do. This answers almost 100% of the questions that come up.

I do not find the text too small as one reviewer has suggested and it has been the same size since 1987. This is the best and most comprehensive small book on taxes on the market. It covers personal taxes very well, and does have a surprisingly good coverage of general corporate, partnership and not for profit corporate coverage.

Jeff Victor is a principal sales consultant at Oracle Corporation. Prior to joining Oracle, Jeff was a principal field technologist for Sun Microsystems. He is an OpenSolaris Zones Community Leader, the creator of the zonestat open-source program, and a regular author, contributor, and speaker at corporate and industry events. Jeff received a bachelor of science degree in computer science from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

 

Jeff Savit is a product manager in the Oracle VM Server organization. and specializes in operating systems, virtualization, and performance. Prior to Oracle, he was a Principal Field Technologist at Sun. Previously he was a Vice President at Merrill Lynch, with roles in systems programming, software development, market data, and web applications.

He was awarded a patent for dynamic workload management, and is an author or co-author of several books including "Oracle Solaris 10 Virtualization Essentials", "Enterprise Java",  "VM & CMS: Performance and Fine Tuning", "VM/CMS Concepts and Facilities". 

 

Gary Combs  is a Sales Performance Designer, in the Oracle Sales and Partner Academy at Oracle Corporation. He specializes in creating field sales training programs covering SPARC servers, and all Engineered Systems. Prior to joining Oracle, Gary was with Sun Microsystems. He has over 15 years of direct sales support experience as a systems engineer, and over 15 years of marketing positions in product management, product definition, and technical marketing. Gary is co-author of the book, "Oracle Solaris 10 System Virtualization Essentials".

 

Bob Netherton is a principal sales consultant at Oracle Corporation specializing in Oracle Solaris, virtualization, open-source software, and Linux interoperability. Prior to joining Oracle, Bob was a principal field technologist for Sun Microsystems, and was one of the architects and content developers of the Solaris Boot Camp and Deep Dive seminar series. In addition, he has developed several best practices guides for Solaris as well as an advanced Solaris training curriculum. Bob is also involved in several OpenSolaris users groups in the American Midwest and Southwest. Bob received a bachelor of science degree in applied mathematics from the University of Missouri, and he is a regular blogger on Solaris, virtualization, and open-source technologies.

Brief but enjoyable primer

This is a brief but good introduction to operators, eigenvalues, and linear vector spaces. The discussion starts out with motivating the study of eigenvalues, which emerged from problems such as that of a vibrating string, and other problems with boundary conditions. The book then goes on to consider orthogonal functions and expansions, Sturm-Liouville theory and linear operators, and the last chapter is on vector spaces. Plus there are two appendices, one on Bessel cylindrical functions and the other on Legendre functions and spherical harmonics.

The vector chapter is over 40 pages and about half of the book, the other chapters being relatively brief, but enough to get your feet wet. I especially enjoyed the chapter on Sturm-Liouville theory, which I didn't know much about before, but had heard about for many years. For a little primer it was fine for that purpose and was money well spent, considering that the book was only eight bucks (with a one dollar discount for paperbacks at B & N).

I'm a big fan of the Dover paperbacks which often reprint quality classics at a fraction of what you'd pay for a modern text, and which are often better. Some advanced books in math and engineering these days can be $80 to $120, so Dover paperbacks at ten to fifteen dollars are a bargain. I have many of the Dover books in math and the sciences and consider them the foundation of that part of my library, even if I own other more expensive, more recent volumes.

Nice and concise

Great book for obtaining/reviewing the math skills needed for quantum mechanics. I love the message: the mathematics needed for quantum mechanics is relevant for many areas of classical physics. In fact, the math was mostly developed in the context of classical physics, enabling quantum mechanics to develop at a remarkable pace once the concepts were discovered. For $10, it's a great deal for anyone learning quantum mechanics.

Sloppy, unclear, misleading: unfit for use as a textbook

I originally gave this book a much more generous review, but after having worked with it extensively, I have revised my review. This high-level text is aimed towards people in Ph.D. programs and theoretical researchers in statistics and related areas. The second edition of this book seems hastily thrown together, especially as one gets into the later chapters. It is difficult to use and may be misleading to many students. Its only justifiable use, in my opinion, is as a survey of the literature on point estimation up through the 90's, but even here it is not ideal. The earlier edition by Lehmann is, in my opinion, much better written.

* This book has some strengths. It is rich with concrete examples. Whenever an abstract structure, framework, or idea is introduced, the authors provide numerous examples and discussion. For the mathematically mature reader, one will find that this book (unlike the more elementary Casella and Berger text) focuses primarily on deeper meaning, although chapters 4-6 seem to have more tedious formulas and manipulations than 1-3.

* The problem sets have good and bad aspects: the gradient of difficulty is fairly natural and there is a diversity of difficulty levels. Many problems touch on some deeper theoretical issues and/or are useful for understanding basic concepts. However, the problems are often very poorly and imprecisely worded. Rather than making the problem sets self-contained, they often reference earlier examples and problems--sometimes one must page back to 3 or 4 different parts of the book to understand the full statement of a problem. Often, the problems require additional unstated assumptions and many are outright false as written without these assumptions. In my opinion, many of the exercises are not very useful because anyone able to understand their full and precise statement would find them almost trivial. In a sense, however, working these exercises does help one to develop the ability to dredge through sloppy work and re-state the mathematics in a precise manner, which is a useful skill.

This leads into my next criticism:

* The book is full of errors, especially in the exercises. Some errors are typos, but others are assertions, inconsistencies, or omissions in the discussion that can be misleading and sometimes are logical fallacies. The most common error is the omission of certain key assumptions for a theorem or exercise--without which the theorem or exercise is false. These errors can be hard to spot because the subject material is subtle and the book is filled with statements and assertions that are true but may appear at first strange or counterintuitive. This book has been in print almost 9 years as of when I am writing this review, and the publisher ought to have released at least a revised printing. I was not able to find an errata page on the internet either. Many of the errors are left-overs from the first edition that were never corrected. This is inexcusable and puts both author and publisher to shame!

* For a book written at this high a level, this book is disturbingly lacking in rigor. Certain important terms (group families, invariance, Jeffreys prior, Haar measure, to name a few) are given only a vague, loose definition, and are never defined fully and rigorously. Few proofs are given, even when inclusion of the proof would greatly enhance understanding. This book is advanced enough that a student lacking mathematical maturity would not be able to get much out of it: a higher level of rigor would clarify underlying ideas rather than being a hindrance.

* This book is not self-contained. While most people reading this book will own useful supplementary references, I think that the omissions in this book are too much. A brief appendix with a rigorous definition of all technical terms and a summary of certain distributions would be welcome. The 10-page index of figures, tables, and examples is, in my opinion, useless, and ought to be replaced by a useful appendix or two. The table of notation is useless since the author makes use of many notational conventions that are not included in this table.

* In its use and discussion of loss functions, this book ignores the insights that decision theory has to offer. The book uses loss functions haphazardly, often on the sole basis of mathematically convenience or past convention. The book focuses almost exclusively on squared error loss and related losses, and also heavily on convex losses. I think this attitude, while appropriate to some of the problems described in the book, is misleading and sets up bad habits for students. In reality, most loss functions derived from utility theory have concave tails, and most location-parameter losses are asymmetric about 0. The book does not discuss these issues, nor does it develop any theory or machinery that could be used to tackle problems involving such loss functions. In ignoring these issues, the book loses sight of the purpose and application behind the mathematical structure. This leads into my next criticism:

* This book does not provide much of a framework for relating theory to applications. Many of the examples given and referenced in the text are "toy" examples, mathematical oddities that infrequently arise in practice. In practice, much of the mathematical structure arising in statistics originates at the level of the application, and this book seems to treat the structure as if it exists on its own, for its own sake. While there's nothing wrong with a book focusing on theory, I think that the theory should be developed with an eye towards its use in a practical setting. This book's discussion of open areas of research seems skewed towards esoteric, theoretical areas that are less useful for the advancement of human knowledge than other areas which are actually more elementary and less well-developed. Perhaps this point of critique is directed not just at this book but at the field of applied mathematics and statistics as a whole. However, I think that the degree to which this book delves into "theory for the sake of theory" is rather extreme. There are so many ways theory can be developed so as to be more practically useful, and this book simply doesn't go down that path at all.

* This book's treatment of Bayesian statistics is superficial and, in my opinion, the chapter on Bayesian methods is exceptionally poor compared with the rest of the book. When discussing Bayesian methods, the authors only discuss their use as they apply towards the end of obtaining "good" frequentist estimators. Bayesian thinking is not integrated into the discussion from the beginning; it is treated as an afterthought or a technique. I think this is a great loss, since a Bayesian perspective can enhance the presentation of a number of topics covered. The Bayesian chapter also has more muddled presentation, and is more technical and tedious (especially in the exercises) than the rest of the book.

* Some other sections are just straight up bad. I found the sections on linear models in the chapter on equivariance to be useless because the presentation was so arcane and so distant from the original motivation that it was nearly impossible to get anything useful out of it.

Bottom line? This book is widely used as a textbook, and I think that its use as a textbook is very hard to justify. If it is used as a textbook, it absolutely needs to be supplemented by additional materials--its use alone could be very confusing and also possibly misleading.

As a supplement, I recommend "Statistical Decision Theory and Bayesian Analysis" by Berger. That book is a good way to "undo" the damage that this book does. In particular, it will warn people about potential ways the techniques described in this book can be misused, and it will show the student how to think properly (and critically) about loss functions. Although the name suggests a completely different focus, the books overlap more than one might expect, and that book is infinitely more well-written. It also addresses nearly all the shortcomings I mentioned above, although it certainly does not cover all of the same material. In my opinion, the material that it does not cover is both less interesting and less useful from a practical perspective.

highly theoretical text

Erich Lehmann wrote this classic text on point estimation as the companion to his earlier masterpiece on hypothesis testing. The book lived up to the standard set by the other text. This edition, now published by Springer-Verlag was revised with the help of George Casella who is also an excellent writer. Another great reference book that statisticians should have on their bookshelf.

Wonderful Program Outlined Step-by-Step

Cognitive-Behavioral Treatment of Obesity is so informative that I read it cover to cover within a couple of days before actually going back and studying the material. I am a Counselor aspiring to specialize in weight management and eating disorders. This is the best reference guide I've found related to obesity management. The authors not only guide the counselor through step-by-step modules but also includes dialogue examples with clients as well as educational client hand-outs to help foster a successful weight loss program. Of equal value and importance, clients are taught lifestyle changes to ensure long-term maintenance of a healthy weight. I recommend this book to any counselor with an interest in addressing the issue of obesity in his or her practice. Helpful tool in therapy

Very easy read, great tips, very helpful. I'm only through the first few sessions with my patient but seems to be going well. It's a very long treatment program, so at my setting I've had to edit it and just take tips. But I like it.

If you aren't a clinician, this book is going to be rough for you. Yes, it said "Clinician's Guide" on the cover, but I thought it would be something I could read and learn from as I have a doctorate in a related field. Um. No.

Massimo Nardone holds a Master of Science degree in Computing Science from the University of Salerno, Italy. He worked as a PCI QSA and Senior Lead IT Security/Cloud/SCADA Architect for many years, and currently works as the Security, Cloud and SCADA Lead IT Architect for Hewlett Packard Finland. He has more than 20 years of work experience in IT, including Security, SCADA, Cloud Computing, IT Infrastructure, Mobile, Security and WWW technology areas for both national and international projects. Massimo has worked as a Project Manager, Cloud/SCADA Lead IT Architect, Software Engineer, Research Engineer, Chief Security Architect, and Software Specialist. He worked as visiting lecturer and supervisor for exercises at the Networking Laboratory of the Helsinki University of Technology (Aalto University). He has been programming and teaching how to program with Perl, PHP, Java, VB, Python, C/C++ and MySQL for more than 20 years. He is the author of Beginning PHP and MySQL (Apress, 2014) and Pro Android Games (Apress, 2015).
