Comprehensive...but untested recipes.

This is the most comprehensive English-language Nepali cookbook available. It contains almost 500 pages and 300 recipes. If you want to know how to make a particular dish, the recipe will most likely be in this book. I am incredibly happy this book was published because I no longer have to bother my mom for her recipes. Most recipes also have a brief, but helpful commentary.

For those unfamiliar with Nepali cooking, there is also an ingredients/equipment section and a brief glossary.

Allowing for variations in cooking styles and tastes between individuals, I do have serious issues with the quantities listed in the recipes. Having made about a dozen dishes from this book, I am convinced that many of the recipes were not tested. I am an experienced cook and grew up on this food, so I was able to make the necessary adjustments. For instance, a dal recipe requires twice as much water as listed; some dishes are woefully undersalted; the maalpuwa requires more enrichment from milk and clarified butter, and the sel completely falls apart in the oil if the batter is made to the consistency of "heavy cream" as directed. Someone unfamiliar with the cuisine might require a few tries to get it right, or might end up with the wrong impression of how the dish is supposed to be.

Nepali cuisine is almost exclusively home cooking, and even the mistakes in the recipes exemplify this notion. The only measuring devices used are the eyes and the hands, and perhaps that is why some of the quantified amounts seem to be off. Still, I have to take off a star for this, as well for the lack of photos.

In the end, I still highly recommend this book, both to Nepalis and others interested in this cuisine. I am confident that you will find pleasure in one of the least known and healthiest cuisines in the world.

fantastic!

With several dozen cookbooks on our shelves, my wife and I are fairly critical of new additions. This one definitely passes with flying colors. Pathak has included the little details that make shopping, cooking and eating such a delight. Not only do you get Nepali recipes in exquisite detail (an extremely rare occurence in and of itself) but you come to learn much about the country, its people and its customs. I highly recommend this book to any foodie or otherwise.

A 'must' for any serious international cookbook collection

Finally, a cookbook devoted entirely to Nepalese cooking which offers a range of classic dishes adapted for American kitchens and equipment. History, discussions of Nepalese cuisine, and introductions to each dish which offer serving tips and insights - as in a Spicy Stuffed Eggs, compared to Deviled Eggs and advised to serve at room temperature by itself - makes for a cookbook clear in instruction and approach. No color photos - but the easy recipes don't need them. Access to a spices shouldn't be a problem either, as most - ground cumin, chopped cilantro, ground coriander and fresh ginger, for example, are readily available in American markets. Highly recommended: a 'must' for any serious international cookbook collection: there's simply nothing like it on the American market.

"It has really good stories and humor

My 10 year old says, "Epic Epic Epic!" When pressed on why he thought it was epic, he said, "It has really good stories and humor. The old stories were shaken up a bit, and made funny."
I agree with him - this is a good way for kids to get the old Greek legends - Hercules, Perseus, Jason and the Argonauts - in a form that entertains young boys. The narrator is sly and sarcastic, and points out the icky parts of the legends well.

Great content, horrible product

My daughter loves the Percy Jackson series and was very excited to receive this book to learn more about Greek mythology. Unfortunately, the book is constructed with a cheap glue spine binding. The pages started falling out almost immediately upon reading. Based on the content alone, I'd give this a 5, but since I've had to spend time and tape holding it together it only gets a 3.

Naked As In Stripped Of Our Illusions Of Self

If human beings ever make contact with an intelligent species from beyond planet earth, then the observations those "people" might make about us would probably read quite a bit like the ones evolutionary zoologist Morris makes in this humorous but deadly serious study of the human animal. The very things we have come to see as mundane about ourselves are the very traits Morrison zeroes in on here. Very little escapes this careful study, although in some cases humanity might collectively wish it had. In this book the human species is anatomically, psychologically, sociologically and biologically cataloged and classified. We read a dispassionate critique of our mating habits, the ways in which we raise our young, our preferences for foods, for where we live, for how we interact with one another, and what bodily features are universally desired over others. In the end I was left both amazed and embarrassed to be among the membership in this great and crazed life form.

I have owned this book in various stages of my life ... now that my son is married with a son on the way I am about to buy it again... this time for him. I believe everyone should read this book it explains so much about us .. and why we do the things we do as people. It was a real eye opener.

This book presents the foundations of theoretical computer science in a format accessible to undergraduate computer science students. Designed to serve as a text for a one-semester introductory course in the theory of computation, the book covers the traditional topics of formal languages, automata, computability, and computational complexity. In his book, Glenn Brookshear encourages students to appreciate the theoretical ideas as the foundation on which real problems are solved, rather than viewing them as unuseable abstractions. Theory of Computation covers regular, context-free, and general phrase-structure languages along with their associated automata, computability in the context of Turing machines, partial recursive functions and simple programming languages, and complexity theory with an introduction to some of the open classification problems relating to the classes P and NP.

About the Author

J. Glenn Brookshear is an Associate Professor at Marquette University. He received his Ph.D. from New Mexico State University in 1975, then was hired by Marquette to build a strong Computer Science curriculum. In addition to his highly successful Computer Science: An Overview, Brookshear has authored Theory of Computation: Formal Languages, Automata, and Complexity, also published by Addison-Wesley.

Best book ever written on Formal Languages

This is the best book ever written on Formal Languages, Automata, and Complexity.

It is obvious that the author is a true master of not only the subject matter but also writing.

I have read many books on the subject and this is without doubt the best that I have ever read.

An outstanding and unique book

It was sad for me to learn that this one book is now out-of-print. Back in 1990 when I bought it, it was the very first book to explain some of the most exciting subjects in theory of computation in a way that it is so clear and motivating. When I read it again, the same thoughts come back to my mind. This book is very well written. It is a shame that so many computer science students and researchers may now not have the opportunity to learn from it too.

really great book

this is an excelent book, too bad it's hard to find. Dr brookshear explains very well the theory, without going too deep in not-so-significant subjects, but he does mention them (sometimes in the chapter exercises), so you can look for them on your own.

Petr Šmilauer is Associate Professor of Ecology in the Department of Ecosystem Biology at the University of South Bohemia. His main research interests are: multivariate statistical analysis, modern regression methods, as well as the role of arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis in plant communities. He is co-author of the multivariate analysis software Canoco 5, CANOCO for Windows 4.5, CanoDraw, and TWINSPAN for Windows.

Jan Lepš is Professor of Ecology in the Department of Botany at the University of South Bohemia, and in the Institute of Entomology at the Czech Academy of Sciences. I had to get this for a class and it has been very helpful for that class as well as for some of my others. The book is written in such a way that it is easy to read, not a whole bunch of technical jargon. Thus far I have not fallen asleep while reading it, so to me that means it is well written.

Another Great Irvine Welsh Novel.

Mr. Welsh is among my favorite contemporary novelists. I have read 5 or 6 of his novels and have enjoyed all of them greatly. "Filth" is among his best. We all know "Trainspotting" thanks to Danny Boyle but "Filth" in my opinion (they also made it into a film - with a brilliant performance by James McIlvoy) is far more enjoyable. I will continue to read Welsh whenever he publishes anything new and I look forward to his new works greatly.

He's an incredible swine......

The main character Bruce Robertson is truly filth. He is a police sergeant but doesn't mind stealing from the public, from his friends, turning his co-workers against each other, all to his own benefit. I won't go into what he does on his holiday in Amsterdam. He uses and abuses women for his own pleasure.The book opens a view of police of police corruption outside of the U.S. (where police corruption is almost commonplace. Written in the vernacular of cops, the book almost makes you feel sorry for the main character, almost.Once you start reading this book it will be hard to put down. A very good book.

WOW!A MIND SCRAMBLER

I PICKED THIS ONE UP ON THE STRENGTH OF ONLY SEEING TRAINSPOTTING AND NEVER HAVING ACTUALLY READ THE BOOK. I KNOW IT SOUNDS STUPID, BUT I AM GLAD I DID.
THE WHOLE STORY LEFT MY MIND DIRTY IN SOME SPOTS LAUGHING IN OTHERS. IF YOU CAN PRETEND YOU'RE A SCOTSMAN WHILE YOU ARE READING IT THE STYLEI IN WHICH WELSH WROTE FILTH WILL BE NO PROBLEM, IF YOU CAN NOT IT MIGHT BE A HARD READ. I THINK THAT'S WHY OTHER REVIEWERS DID NOT ENJOY THE BOOK AS MUCH AS I DID.
IT WAS A SMART READ, WICH YOU DO NOT GET ALOT THESE DAYS. THE STORY BACK TRACKS ONTO ITSELF. YOU THINK ONE THING IS GOING BUT ANOTHER IS REALLY HAPPENING. IS IT THE PARASITE TALKING OR IS THE MAIN CHARACTER IN THE STORY NUTS. IS HIS WIFE REALLY COMING BACK? AND WILL HE EVER GET ANOTHER VACTION?
JUST READ THIS AND FIND OUT. IT WAS AMAZING.
