great game, great strategy guide

If your looking for a great strategy guide for a great game, don't look any further. This guide has coverage of all the missions in each adventure. Each Wanzer is different. This guide tells in detail pilot skills, stats, and reveals secrets for maximizing effectiveness. This game is a lot of fun. It is much like Final Fantasy Tactics. If you need a strategy guide, this guide is for you.

Comprehensive Strategy Guide

This is a well-written guide with a lot of documentation. You start off with a summary on game basics, which then progresses to a description of the different parts on your Wanzer (mech), backpacks, computers, items, and weapons. Next is a great table on all of the available weapons (broken down into categories like Ranged-Rifles, Melee-Batons, etc), computers, and backpacks showing each one's weight, action point (AP) cost, damage, range, accuracy %, capacity (computers and backpacks), special attributes (computers), and energy output (backpacks). Another table shows all of the Battle Skills attainable in the game, a description of what each one does, and which body part from which Wanzer you get it from.
Then you are given the stats for each body part for each Wanzer (those that the player can keep anyway). The stats include HP, movement rates, accuracy upgrade percentages, boost upgrade stats, and evade upgrade stats. Finally, each body part's attainable Battle Skill is displayed again with how many computer slots they take up, as is the condition for attaining them.
Next come full walkthroughs of both the Alisa and Emma mission trees. You are given strategy recommendations for each mission, told where you start and the enemy starting positions, which enemies you will face with their full stats, and are given a recommendation on what Def-C to protect against: Fire, Penetration, or Impact weapons. Also, you are given notes on when to check your email or the Network and who to speak to in what order so you don't miss anything.
The last part of the guide lists every "Website", any passwords, when they are available in the game, and in what mission their content changes so you don't have to check after every mission.
Finally, you are shown how to get the Hoshun Mk112 Wanzer with its 250-damage beam rifle (for free off the Network!). This is the most powerful Wanzer you can get and the most powerful weapon in the whole game.
All in all, this guide covers almost everything the game throws at you. The only thing it doesn't tell you is what you get if you have all platinum rankings at the end of the game (which is pretty hard to achieve).

The "Gold Mine" of Strategy Guides

If you have played the game (FM3), then this is a no-brainer...you have GOT to get this guide. It is beautifully illustrated and painstakingly thorough in all the nuances of this fine game. You get stats of parts, mechs, locations of enemies, types of enemies, as well as the storyline segues.

The guide also has the points in both storylines where "secrets" can be found....and this alone is worth the price of the book!

You'll want to play the game all over again JUST to find the stuff you missed all those other times!

It doesn't tell you how to "win" this game outright...just how to be a lot better at it, and that's fine with me.

This is an invaluable resource whenever the mood strikes you and you have a need to jump in the old "Wanzer" and wreak some havoc (and save the world while you're at it)!

This is a must-have item!

Good advice lost in the details...

As the author points out in this book's introduction, Internet searching gets more difficult as the number of Web pages on the Internet increases. Finding what you want isn't simply a matter of entering the right keywords in a search engine. You need to know how to search and which search engine will work best for you. You need to know where to start on the Internet if the information you are searching for can be found without using a search engine or is found on what the author calls "the invisible Web," the part of the Internet that hasn't been mapped and indexed by search engines.

"The Extreme Searcher's Internet Handbook" is a practical-advice guide to Internet searching. The author looks at Web directories and search engines and tells you where to start when you are doing different kinds of research. There is also advice for conducting research in newsgroups and mailing lists, as well as a catalogue of online references such as encyclopedias and dictionaries. A chapter on news sources and online shopping Web sites rounds out the book.

If you are patient, you can get a lot of good advice from this book. I discovered, for example, that one search engine, AltaVista, permits "NEAR" searches for keywords within ten words of one another on Web pages. I didn't know this kind of search was available. I also discovered a handful of excellent directories and Web sites for conducting Internet research.

However, this book doesn't serve well as a reference. The headings are not particularly descriptive, which makes finding information difficult. The author does a good job of explaining each search engine's features, but the features are presented in long bulleted lists, which makes it hard to compare the search engines. A table in Chapter 4 attempts to compare different search engines, but the table is so crowded with data, it is nearly impossible to read or understand.

The author rightfully points out that Internet researchers often neglect newsgroups and mailing lists in their research, but his instructions for searching for newsgroups with Google are out of date and he doesn't explain how to use Outlook Express or another newsgroup reader to subscribe to newsgroups. Worse, he lumps Yahoo! groups in with newsgroups, when really the two are quite different, as Yahoo! groups are held privately by Yahoo! members (and for that matter, the author might have considered explaining how to create a Yahoo! group on your own). Only three pages are devoted to mailing lists. I think this topic could've used more attention.

The author obviously knows his stuff and is passionate about helping others conduct research on the Internet. I just wish this book was organized more carefully and was professionally published. As another reviewer noted, a graphic image (of a leaf?) obscures the page numbers. That is unforgivable in a reference book like this one, where you often have to consult the index and turn to a particular page. I got angry more than once at not being able to tell which page I was looking at.

Wow. Ran Hock's done it again. I'm a jaded, long-time web researcher, but I opened up this book and wondered how I'd managed before now. Ran offers detailed descriptions of search engines and their key features, techniques for finding multimedia content, reviews of the major web directories, tips for searching news, and even a nice "Internet reference shelf." This book should be on every web searcher's desk.

About the Author
Roberta Berns is a Professor Emerita at the University of California, Irvine, as well as Saddleback College, where she founded and chaired the Human Development Department. Berns also was a student of renowned developmental psychologist Urie Bronfenbrenner at Cornell University. She lives in California with her husband, a professor of bioengineering. They have two children (one, an English professor and the other, a professor of neuroscience) and two grandchildren.

Awkward wording, annoying to read

Within reading the first 5 pages of the book, I already wanted to rip it off. About 80% of the time, the author phrases sentences so awkwardly, that you have to pause and think about what she is trying to say, and wonder what that has to do with anything. After you start getting annoyed, you start asking why she couldn't just phrase it in everyday language. There are many easier ways she could have wrote it, but I suppose she was trying to sound smart and it just comes off sounding unnatural, awkward, and confusing. For example, she did not say this, but this is her method of writing:

Instead of saying something as easy as "The way in which a parent socializes a child will depend mostly on the child's temperament" she would say "Parental socialization interacts with child temperament in ways that elicit behavior responses that a parent intended to communicate". I failed to phrase it awkwardly, but you can probably see what I mean...imagine reading this for every other sentences in the book?

Would not recommend this book to anyone.

This book was very informative while I was in my course through college. This book will help me with other issues that may arise as a teacher. I gained a great deal of information on the aspects of socialization of children with peers, parents, other adults, and the media.

Great Book

This book was required for my Child Development: Child, Family and Community course and it was very insightful. Though some points may be obvious and other lack some detail, the immense amount of information this book covered was a great overview of the ecological study of child socialization.

Very creative!

A very creative book based on the 12 days of Christmas (like the song). Be prepared to explain what Nine Lambs Cavorting and Six donkeys braying means to your young ones. The pictures are very nice and meant to keep their attention.

And at the end of the book is the real Christmas story from the gospel of Luke.

Overall a great book for preschool age.

Children love this book

My wife owns an in-home preschool and all the kids are singing this song. They love it. My own two children also love this book. She is teaching them the song one day at a time and after the days part is learned, they are begging to know what comes next. I love that this book reinforces the true meaning of Christmas (and in song , so the kids can remember it easier).

which makes it more fun to read

It's just ok. It's a take on the 12 days of Christmas, but using biblical references instead of the "4 calling birds" - it does rhyme, which makes it more fun to read, but many of the items for the days are verbally cumbersome. Even "one baby Jesus" sounds a bit weird when it's read or sung - attaching a discrete quantity to a person? I bought to include with a 25 Books of Christmas project for my 3 and 5 year old. We read a few times, but it didn't sustain their interest. Other books about the story of the nativity were easier to understand - this doesn't really tell the story per se, it just identifies the pieces of the story - shepherds, angels, stars. I plan to keep and use again next year, but it definitely wasn't a home run for us.

very good book

Joel Watson has done a terrific job introducing game theory. Beware- game theory is not for the light hearted, this book does contain some very dense mathematical proofs etc. The hardest part of the book is understanding the mathematical proofs for the main ideas of game theory. Once the mathematical foundation has been layed down it is very easy to follow the main concepts such as nash equilibrium, bargaining solutions, etc. Watson writes in a very relaxed and informal fashion, which is very refreshing. If your professor requires this book for class you should not worry, this is one of the best books on the market.

About the Author

Mark Stavish (Pennsylvania) has been a long-time student of esotericism and is a frequent lecturer on ancient occult knowledge. Founder of the Institute for Hermetic Studies, he is the author of numerous articles on Western esotericism. In 2001 he established the Louis Claude de St. Martin Fund, a non-profit dedicated to advancing the study and practice of Western Esotericism. He has also served as a consultant to print and broadcast media and several documentaries. He holds undergraduate degrees in Theology and Communications and a Master's in Counseling.

A Future Classic

The Path of Alchemy - Energetic Healing and the World of Natural Magic by Mark Stavish is simply the finest book on practical alchemy that I have ever read. While focusing on introductory material and plant work, or spagyrics, it has enough meaty stuff for everyone. There is a fascinating discussion of the role of homeopathy in alchemy; extensive meditations and practices to link laboratory work (Labora) with inner work (Ora); initiation and the Tree of Life via alchemy; and some good background material on alchemy in the 20th Century. However, even the appendices are juicy in their description of the Tarot and the Alchemical process; the famed Longevity Tea of the Comte de St-Germain, similar to the confirmed recipe found in the long out of print, and very valuable biography on St. Germain by Jean Overton Fuller, and a fascinating description of the Flamel Path, of Nicholas and Pernelle Flamel, made famous in the first Harry Potter book, "The Sorcerer's Stone". If you are going to read just one book on alchemy this year, or ever, I suggest "The Path of Alchemy".

P.S. Speaking as someone with next to no background in the Art, Mark Stavish has delivered a user friendly manual that renders the most obscure and complex material in plain language. However, this does not imply that the work is simplistic. As the Alchemists say, it requires both prayer and labor, "ora et labora".

Disillusioning upon close inspection

This is an engaging, entertaining book, very accessible and a pleasure to read. This, unfortunately, functions as a seductive allurement to misleading or incomplete laboratory alchemy instructions. I was willing to overlook certain odd techniques such as using sea salt as the basis for a plant stone (why would you do this? why use an animal salt as a substitute for a plant salt? the seed must be planted in its corresponding womb in order to grow and become an alchemical child, so that's like trying to mate an octopus with an orchid) or doing the cohobation of the spagyric tincture one pinch at a time (this would probably work, but it's more convenient to cohobate all at once and then filter the result after they have been well-mixed), but the section on Ens Melissa really got my goat.

It's so incorrect and incomplete that someone following these instructions would waste a lot of energy creating a poison. The deliquescence of potassium carbonate is not "angel water," it was called "oil of tartar per deliquiem" - its distillate is angel water. You should use the oil of tartar. The melissa must be removed from the oil of tartar before the alcohol is added. The alcohol must be 95% pure ethanol, or it will not separate, and then your solution will be half-lye and undrinkable!

Anyway, I really wanted to like this book, but considering the trouble it takes to make the deliquescence I was taken aback that the rest of the instructions for creating the Ens were slapdash.

The best of all possible beginnings

This book is a true gem. Before reading it I had little interest in laboratory alchemy and while I still have little interest in the path of mineral alchemy, my interest was more than just a little piqued by this book.

Plant Alchemy or spagyria is the application of alchemical theory to herbal products. By breaking up the plant into it's "Mercury" (alcohol product), "Sulfur" (essential volatile oils) and "Salt" (the white/gray ash left over from a slow, low temperature burn) these three principles are then recombined in various ways (even producing a plant "stone") to enhance and purify the occult, energetic properties of the plant.

The true value of this book is in the author's ability to make the work seem so possible, even easy. Mr. Stavish also has the courage to admit that he believes that plant alchemy can be more than just a healing art but also has the potential to be an initiatory path in and of itself (a claim usually reserved for the path of laboratory mineral alchemy). I agree with him with the caveat that a strong energetic bond must first be forged with the very plant whose product is being worked upon. The practice of "dieting" a plant as practiced in some South American shamanic traditions would seem to be a useful practice as a preliminary to such laboratory work (see Plant Shamanism by Heaven and Charing).

The only criticism I have for this book is that it would seem to make it all look too easy. In fact I would prefer to have more guidance in the actual temperatures at which to heat the product at various stages and for how long to expect each stage to take. I would also have liked to learn more about the distillation processes as the technique Mr. Stavish goes into is only for those on a shoe string budget. However, as the title of my review states, this book is the best of all possible beginnings.

Other sources to study are the works of Junius Manifred and the works of Jean DuBuis whose works expand upon and fill in the gaps of this brilliant primer.
