My copy is now worn and dog eared, but used often.

THIS IS THE BEST!

Out of over 50 English and grammar books that I have--this is, by far, the absolute best of them all. Blumenthal was absolutely brilliant in the design of this book.

In total, there are 3,231 questions in this compact volume. The book will explain all grammar subjects such as sentences, adverbs, punctuation, etc. . . . The rest of the lesson is posed in questions for you to answer. There is one question per page and the page is divided into, what they call, frames. For example on page 5, frame 3, there is a sentence: "The dog is barking." The question is, "This group of words is a sentence because it gives us a sense of (completeness, incompleteness)." In order to find out the correct answer you turn the page, where you will find the answer and the next question.

They pose the questions in every possible way you can think of. That is why there are 3,231 of them. By the time you finish answering the questions you really do know the material quite well.

I feel this book is suitable for anyone who is learning or has trouble remembering the lessons of grammar or anyone who just wants to brush up on skills. The book is fun and learning is fast.

I liked this book so much I had an old beat up copy that was marked through with pen and pencil that I found at a thrift store. I went through and erased all I could. Then, I put labels over the penned parts so I couldn't see them. Still, the book was a sloppy mess. I had that copy for 13 years. At Christmas, I found at Amazon, someone selling a pristine copy for a great price and I got it. I am thrilled! I did not throw away the old copy. I gave it to a Russian family with small children so they would have an easier time of learning English. I just can't rave enough about this book.

Throughout 'The Abyssinian Contortionist', David Carlin's writing is crisp and vivid.

A biography written across several years in real-time, in the immersive style of narrative nonfiction, 'The Abyssinian Contortionist' is a book as striking and memorable as its cover art. Its author, Melbourne-based writer and teacher David Carlin, charts the course of his friendship with a circus performer named Sosina Wogayehu, who was born in Ethiopia, visited Australia as a teenager in the late 1990s, and has lived and worked here since.

It feels strange to summarise Wogayehu in a sentence as stark as that, however, as hers is a story of such emotional depth and complexity that it is certainly deserving of a book-length narrative. In Carlin, we have a narrator of rare honesty and bald self-doubt. On numerous occasions he makes clear to the reader that this story was written in close collaboration with its subject: he writes of poring over early drafts of the manuscript with Wogayehu, taking in her feedback and sharpening his prose accordingly.

At one point, while visiting an Ethiopian locale of special significance, he writes, “I look across at Sosina relaxing in the cool air, chewing on her lunch. ‘Do you think this is where the book should end?’ I ask her.” (The answer is self-evident, as the story continues for another 10 pages.)

This meta, self-reflexive style of writing easily could have been a gimmick, and quickly tiresome, but from the outset it is clear Carlin is a master storyteller who is well-equipped for the challenge of capturing the life of a woman about whose culture, at the outset, he knows practically nothing. The subject of 'The Abyssinian Contortionist' is clearly a remarkable person of unusual social mobility and ability, yet Carlin manages to navigate the high-wire act of astute observation without falling into hagiography.

Wogayehu’s story begins in her birthplace, the national capital of Addis Ababa, where the eight-year-old entrepreneur earns pocket money by selling single cigarettes to passers-by each afternoon after school. (This fact alone speaks volumes of her canny character.) Life in Ethiopia is tough, and although her father has a job at a local brewery and her mother runs a combined hotel, restaurant and cafe attached to the family home, their means are limited. Sosina teaches herself how to bend her body into seemingly impossible shapes by watching a weekly German variety show on the only television station in the land, and it is in the family lounge room that her career as a contortionist and circus performer takes root.

So she joined Circus Ethiopia, a group that performed on Broadway in New York, in London and Europe, and in Australia. A scandal erupted within the ranks of the performers, who were disturbed by their exploitation, financial and sexual, during a visit to our shores. The man at the centre of subsequent charges, Marc LaChance, committed suicide after confessing his sins of pedophilia. A splinter group of 15 performers, mostly teenagers, fled Circus Ethiopia seeking humanitarian asylum from the Australian government, which eventually relented by agreeing that Sosina and her friends could stay.

It was while working as a director for Circus Oz — “among trapeze bars and tightwire walkers”, as he puts it — that Carlin crossed paths with the young performer, who had recently graduated from the Australian national circus school. As he notes at the beginning, he was drawn to make a book “that traced the contours of the gap” between the two of them. Carlin states early in the piece that he was also looking to write about something other than himself, having published his acclaimed debut in 2010, 'Our Father Who Wasn’t There', about his father’s suicide when Carlin was six months old, and his resultant search for paternal figures.

This story, however, would have been a far less compelling read if it were a straight biography, as Carlin-as-narrator is present throughout its telling. His regular asides are by turns poignant and comedic, as the narrative smartly jumps between reconstructed scenes from the past and first-person observations in the present without jarring the reader. This is quite a skill, and it is one of Carlin’s chief achievements here, as the book was written across several years and includes two visits to Ethiopia. The closing chapters see Carlin tagging along to his subject’s home town following a death in the family, where he is allowed the rare privilege of bearing witness to the startlingly wide-screen, surround-sound manner in which Ethiopians mourn and grieve. In these scenes, Carlin’s fish-out-of-water presence — as a tall white guy among a sea of dark skin — is never clearer, and his insights into this foreign culture are many and worthy. Throughout 'The Abyssinian Contortionist', his writing is so crisp and vivid that, on reading its final pages, I felt a deep satisfaction and a longing for more.

Frank Bussey was the Director of Operations for the United States Golf Association and directed on-site operations for 23 United States Men's Open Golf Championships. He moved this event from Delray Beach to Boca Raton to finally its permanent home on Key Biscayne.In addition he directed operations for World Cup Polo at Palm Beach Polo and Country Club and Corporate Hospitality for 3000 international clients with facility design of temporary tents and amenities including security and parking at the 1988 Superbowl in San Diego. "The building department can either be an ally or an opponent. It is always best to meet with the building department about your event early in the planning process.

That is worth repeating. It is always better to meet with the building department for your event sooner, rather than later.

Each area of the country is different and each building department has its’ own set of rules. While standard building codes exist, there can be codes specific to the local building department and it is better to be familiar with these at the outset. Pay particular attention to the building codes with regard to tent spacing. In some locales you have to provide a fire break after a number of tents in a row. You will need to know this before you sign off on the tent layout.

The building department should communicate its expectations. Talk to them about the site and what you plan to do. Take maps to leave with them. Have a meeting with all the department heads; create an agenda which explains the scope of the event. Ask help in making your event painless for everyone.

During the practice rounds at one event the building inspector came up to me and told me I had to move some tents in a corporate village. I knew the plans had been submitted well in advance which should have uncovered the problem which was raised. Upon further review at the building department, the inspector found the plans were submitted, but no one caught the spacing issue. In the end, no tents were moved. This reinforces the fact that even if you begin early, errors will occur.

If it is your fault, you have to ask the building inspectors for options. In almost all cases, something can be done to work around the problem. It may cost you money to solve the problem by either adding additional fire personnel or fire equipment.

The Fire Marshal will want to see the flame certificates for the tents as well as a list of hazardous materials used by the decorating company. This list might include the type of wood used in the walls or counters, the ceiling liner material, hard walls, stage lighting and paint. A map showing the location of all these items for quick review in the event something should happen should also be prepared and provided."

His Gateway Arch towers 630 feet above St. Louis, welcoming visitors from across the mighty Mississippi River; the cascading vaults of his TWA terminal at JFK airport greet guests from afar. In many ways, Saarinen's architecture conveys his own experience as an immigrant in the United States; originally from Finland, Saarinen set foot in America in 1923. This elegant compendium provides a lavish array of photographs and sketches of his work, as well as an impressive collection of essays by leading architects and academics. Renowned historian Vincent Scully, for example, addresses Saarinen's role in defining modern architecture in America: by seeing the nation through foreign eyes, he writes, Saarinen understood the responsibility incumbent upon empire. Definitely catch the exhibit!

This book was put together as an accompaniment to a touring exhibit of Eero Saarinen's work. It is one of three books I purchased for an architectural class project on Saarinen and this book is the best of the three, more comprehensive, more personal, and just as if not more informative. I would highly recommend it, it offers tremendous insight into the man as well as the work. The personal interviews and discussions at the end are superb. The editors obviously have a great admiration and affection for Saarinen, and they do an excellent job of making you understand why.

Understanding an architectural genius

This book, and the exhibit that inspired it, go a long way toward explaining the why's and how's of Eero Saarinen's work. On the one hand, he could create what at first glance appear to be purely Miesian International Style designs. On the other, many of his more well known designs seem to anticipate--and perhaps inspire?--the work of architects like Frank Gehry half a century later. By relating his philosophy, his design process, and his willingness to experiment with new construction materials, this book goes a long way toward resolving this anomaly...not ALL the way, but a long way. The data whose release inspired the book and the exhibit are just a treasure trove of information about Saarinen's work. The text of the book is a little uneven, which is not surprising given the large number of authors involved. The inclusion of three lectures by Saarinen is very enlightening, especially the last one which contains perhaps the most extensive statement on his views about architecture. My only frustration is at the very end, with excerpts from the seminar at Yale in 2005 that brought together several of the more illustrious alumni of the Saarinen office. Robert Venturi raises all over again the issue about whether there is a consistent thread to Saarinen's designs, and the responses by his colleagues do not provide a satisfactory answer, unlike the rest of the book.

I liked the drive to survive and the insight it offers. Some of the book is non eventful but it held my attention. Pretty amazing adventure.
