Eloquent, Timely!

This is a fascinating, accessible book for the general reader who wants to know the importance of the Islamic past for contemporary Muslims. Afsaruddin deals with amazing clarity how burning issues like the meanings of jihad, women's rights, and democracy are dealt with by both fundamentalists and modernists as each constructs the past in different ways. Not your typical work of punditry - the author is widely read and grounds her analysis in primary sources, often challenging established stereotypes. Check out p. 127 where the author takes down neo-con Bernard Lewis a peg or two. Highly recommended; eloquently written!

Interesting insights and worth reading, but should've been two books instead of one

Asma Afsaruddin's The First Muslims: History and Memory is a worthwhile read that offers interesting insights and perspectives on both the early history of Islam and on how that history has come to be viewed through the lens of memory. The lens of _selective_ memory more often than not, as Ms. Afsaruddin points out quite vividly, showing how various Islamic writers over the years have consciously edited and shaded the way they relate that history to support or promote their own particular take on how that history should be viewed.

My only real criticism of The First Muslims is that it doesn't go into sufficient depth, either in the section that deals with history or in the section that deals with how that history is viewed and interpreted, particularly in the current day. While I can appreciate the ambitious nature of what Ms. Afsaruddin was trying for, I think the reading public would've been better served by splitting the book into two separate books and then have each book go into greater depth. As it is, this book by itself feels insufficient to the task and while highly educational, left me feeling somewhat dissatisfied at the end, a niggling feeling that there should have been more to both sections in order to properly round things out and to give the subjects the treatment they deserve.

Highly recommended, with the caution that while it does a good job of framing the issue of history versus memory in Muslim perspectives, it falls short in giving the reader a full understanding of just how this has shaped the Muslim world as it exists today, and more importantly, where the lines of difference within the contemporary Muslim world are drawn.

The Best starting place to learn about Islam

This is perhaps the best book to offer as a starting place for a non-Muslim study of Islam. It delves into the sensibilities and convictions of the Prophet, his Companions and Successors in a very readable way. But then Prof. Afsaruddin goes further and connects the dots to the present moment in Islamic intellectual debate. For those who have been watching the "Islamic State" rampage across Iraq and Syria, this book will set it all in context as she looks at the Islamic State, jihad, the roles of women and political governance to see what the First Muslims might say to the present day Islamists. For Christians and Jews who have studied their own scripture's textual formation she lays out the debates about the formation of the Quran and the Hadith (says of the Prophet) and how they achieved "authorized" status. All of this is packed into a clear and yet brief account of these important topics.

I am hoping that what he meant that he didn't want a baby with the other girl because he has always been in love with the stepsister. I think he is mad and sad that the other girl lied about the baby. Making him want to be a father and there wasn't a baby. Now there is one so hope he can be happy.

About the Author

Andrew Grubb is a Senior Immigration Judge in the Asylum and Immigration Tribunal. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences. Prior to taking up a judicial post, he was Professor of Medical law and Head of Cardiff Law School, Cardiff University. Previously, he was Professor of Health Care Law and Director of the Center of Medical Law and Ethics Kings College London and lecturer at Cambridge University. He has been a visiting Professor at Boston University and the University of New Mexico Law Schools. He has been a member of a number of bioethics bodies including the Human Fertilization and Embryology Authority and the Ethics Committee of the Royal College of Physicians. He was editor of the Medical Law Review between 1992 and 2004.
Judith Laing is a lecturer in law at the University of Bristol. She previously taught at Cardiff Law School and the University of Liverpool. Her research and teaching interests lie primarily in tort, criminal and medical law and she has a particular interest in mental health law. She has a number of publications in peer reviewed journals and edited collections, and her PhD thesis was published by OUP in 1999. She assisted Professor Andrew Grubb with the second edition of Principles of Medical Law, as well as co-writing one of the chapters.She has been an Assistant Editor of the Medical law Review and Case Note Editor of the Journal of Social Welfare and Family Law.
Jean McHale is Professor of Health Care Law and Director of the Institute of Medical Law at University of Birmingham Law School. She has taught previously at the Universities of Leciester, East Anglia, Nottingham and Manchester. Her research interests are in the area of health care law. She is a member of the editorial board of the Medical Law Review

Since the last edition of `Principles of Medical Law' was published six years ago, any number of changes in the healthcare landscape have emerged and with them, changes in the law, notably in reforming legislation, such as the Mental Health Act which reached the statute books in 2007.

Also, much has been accomplished, for example, in the fields of assisted reproduction, and the use and regulation of human material such as human organs and tissue. Legal issues arising from healthcare as a profession, the structure of the NHS and the evolving regulatory environments which impact on it are also dealt with as the controversies rage.

The book is the result of team efforts by at least 20 expert contributors. As the editors acknowledge, `the depth of expertise that this volume has demonstrated in the past has been retained, whilst the changes that [have been] introduced reflect the evolving nature of this dynamic discipline'.

In over 1,200 pages with 22 chapters and two short appendices, usefully and punctiliously annotated and footnoted where appropriate, this heavy volume is logically organized into seven parts, covering areas such as:
