Short and easy read! Most people can identify with the feelings and emotions experienced by Kevin (the main character) as he goes on a journey with his new friends that he meets along the way in the "Healing Forest." As the story unfolds, you'll ask yourself what you'd do if you were Kevin; and you too will be forced to take a long, hard look inside yourself and determine if you have what it takes to step out of the forest.

To the author: Inquiring minds want to know if Kevin's friends allow him to leave the forest? And if so, where does the "journey of visibility" take him?

An Enblem For Healing

This book is an emblem for those that require a visual to help them see how they are held captive in their own fear, guilt, anger and pain. It gives a great visual to those that need a description to guide them to heal. It's a great therapeutic guide for a young person that's definitely in need of Hope, Love, Compassion and Joy to their life. Yet, a good source for anyone struggling with their "visibility" through life. I personally enjoyed reading it because I thought, "Only if I had this to read before now, my path to healing would have started a lot sooner!" I really did enjoy it...and it was an easy read. I definitely recommend it.

This is an encyclopedia ... it is HUGE

This is an emmormous book ... it is actualy more like ad encyclpedia. But it is full of some very good information on how to maintain and take responsibility for your own health. Since I have been withou insurance most of my life, I started taking responsibility for my own health when I was young and now cannot even imagine handing that responsibility over to any doctor - most of whom do not have the time to get to know you and do not listen to you. I am 66 years old and have maintain my excellent health for most of my life by listening to my body and staying away from doctors unless it is imperative that I consult one (to get x-ray for what turned out to be a badly sprained ankle). But then, I was always drawn toward the alternative ways of staying healthy.

I gave my well used older edition to my mother and purchased the eleventh edition. HEALTHY HEALING is better than ever, I love it. The book is very easy to read and simple to use. There is invaluable information on a wide variety of healing resources.

I highly recommend Linda Page's HEALTHY HEALING book to anyone interested in improving and maintaining their health.

Feeling Good Naturally

This is one of the best natural health books I have come across. It touches upon such areas as nutrition, exercise and even foods. It gives specifics on healing for infants thru adults. This book is easy to read and self-explanatory. It identifies how to aid ailments in three catagories; foods, herbs and nutrition. By doing this, it allows you to choose the best method for your body and mind. I would recommend this book to everyone who wants to take a sensible approach to healing. Traditional medicines (antibiotics, steroids, etc.) aid one thing while destroying another. This book will help you learn to feed your body back to good health.

The masterful Max Lucado clearly touches hearts and souls as he seeks to make God's story my own. The power of the Gospel comes through clearly, lovingly and forcefully in every chapter. Some chapters took longer to read, however, because I was wiping tears from my eyes. An amazingly powerful book that draws one into the heart of God.

I purchased this book for my mother. This is her review of the book: Very encouraging and insightful- as expected when reading Max Lucado books. He gives the reader hope that being "ordinary" matters to God and that he can use us for greater things, even though we sometimes feel insignificant. I hope this is one of many more Max Lucado books.

I bought the ebook and read it, now I am going to buy the regular book because there are many things I want to underline for future reference. It is an excellent book and it explains some things that I probably knew, but never thought about. I would recommend this book for anyone.

Really, the best way to read The Hobbit

Okay, so I say that this is the best way to read The Hobbit. And I am dead serious.
I know that annotated books can be difficult to navigate, filled with useless, pointless, or just plain boring information, and can be grossly oversized. That is not the case here.
So - here's the scoop.
The original story is very nicely presented, with all original illustrations in color when possible, and in black and white elsewhere. The type is nice and clear, very easy to read. (Many cheaper editions are also rather hard on the eyes. Check the print before you buy, folks!)
The illustrations are printed very clearly, and with very good notes on what they are.
And then the annotations - useful, engaging, and very well done. You will WANT to read these. We discover how the book was written, and what was changed between editions. (There were many changes made so that The Hobbit would conform more easily to the Lord of the Rings trilogy.) There are fascinating tidbits about Tolkien's life and the experiences that made their way into the story.
The forward tells about the writing of the novel, and the appedices give additional details about the text.
There are also many illustrations from other editions of the book. These are varied, from thought-provoking to not-provoking.
And the book is not too big. Some editions are simply too big to be read, but this book is reasonably sized so that you can actually READ IT! In fact, I have not read any other edition of The Hobbit for years, since the original annotated version came out.
The new edition is very much worthwhile. Enjoy!

Finally a "real" unabridged recording of LOTR

I am not one who usually buys books-on-tape (or CD as in this case) but I have long wanted to obtain the Lord of the Rings so as to hear this incredible story over and over. After having read it several times, my book is in tatters and so I searched for an unabridged audio recording. Many of those that I have seen claim to be "unabridged" but the fact is that they are not complete! They give parts of the books in full but leave out many sections or chapters. This set by Rob Inglis is COMPLETE!!! It is very well read with no drastic voicing of characters. Characters are easily distinguished and thoroughly enjoyable. This set is not full of sound effects and music, so if you are looking for that this is not for you. However, I personally prefer the fact that this is not an over-production and is rather quite focussed on what I wanted in the first place, the characters and the story. Inglis does a marvelous job and I am very happy with this set. Again, not to harp on it but, this is a "complete" package well worth the money!!!

A worthy addition to anyone's collection

Since at this point these books no longer need an introduction, I might as well go straight into the review of this edition, the Deluxe Pocked Boxed Set. It features leatherette covers, which are soft and very well made. The colors are less saturated than they are in Amazon's picture, but that is for the better. They are definitely nice and easy to hold, and the "stand" it comes with is sturdy and beautiful. I decided to put them in my desk, and they could not have gotten a better place. The only complaint that might arise is that the font is small, but that is to be expected from a "pocket" edition, and it is readable anyway. Overall, the quality of this edition is magnificent. If you are a fan, this relatively inexpensive set should definitely be added to your collection. If you haven't read the books, stop reading this and go buy them. Seriously. Now.

About the Author
After experiencing the horror of the September 11 attacks in his high school senior year, Jared Maxwell enlisted in the U.S. Army and spent the next nine years in service to his country.
Between March 2006 and June 2007, Jared fought on the frontlines in a heavily forested, mountainous area of Northeast Afghanistan. Unsung Memoirs of an Infantryman is a first-person account of this time in his life and of the history and stories behind fighting in Afghanistan's deadliest province as a young man. Jared also details his deeply personal account of developing posttraumatic stress syndrome due to three tours in combat.
Although originally from New York, Jared has spent most of his life as a Florida resident. Upon leaving the military in 2011, he began attending college and is currently a college student and aspiring novelist. Unsung is his first novel.

Amazing story!

Very well written, keeps you interested through the whole book. It is sad at times and funny at times but its very informative too. God Bless our troops!

Hard to put down

A hard honest look at what our troops endured in the Kunar Province, told from an infantryman's viewpoint. It should be hard for anyone to pass a soldier and not thank them after reading "Unsung".

In My Bloody Life, Reymundo Sanchez tells a chillingly sad tale, from his birth in the back of a pickup truck in Puerto Rico to the day he quit the Latin Kings gang, 21 years later. From the first page, his narrative is unpretentious, disarmingly honest, and horrifyingly riveting. His early years were so full of pain and abuse that by the time he opts, at age 11, to hang out with the local gang, the Latin Kings, it seems a perfectly logical choice. In his shoes, any one of us--smacked nightly by a mother and beaten ragged whenever the stepfather got the chance--would likely have chosen the same path. The gang was the family that accepted him as well as the peer group that offered girls who didn't say "no." Any violence that went with the territory couldn't match the atmosphere of brutality that permeated his own home.

Sanchez was a Latin King for six years and participated in innumerable bloody gang battles--years rife with sex, drugs, booze, and acts of gang revenge. He finally got up his pluck to leave (and the only way was to be "violated" out through a gang beating), but admits in his conclusion that life since then has, in some ways, been even harder. He's had to quit drugs, lose the only community he's known, support himself, and deal with the nightmares of all the horrors he's seen and done. Chicago in the 1980s provides the setting for this extremely disturbing and raw account of a Puerto Rican teenager who lost himself to violent gang activity. Now repentant, Sanchez (a pseudonym) writes in a voluble voice, replete with operatic asides declaiming the immorality of his actions. But he offers a forceful and unusual perspective on ChicagoAin Sanchez's telling, it's a place of territorial graffiti and racist cops, in which a slow-motion riot of drugs, sex and gunplay constantly unfolds. Sanchez recounts his family's arrival in Chicago's Northwest Side in the late 1970s, when he was a small boy; he describes the beatings his grifter stepfather regularly doled out; and he portrays the allure of the mysterious and ritual-bound lives of tough, teenaged gangsters. When his family returned to Puerto Rico, he stayed behind. Soon, he joined the fearsome Latin Kings, and his given street name "Lil Loco" attested to his youth and ferocity. While graphically describing what he witnessed as a gang memberAsenseless killings, inter-ethnic hatreds and sexual abuse of gang-affiliated womenASanchez also pursues harder truths, arguing that it is a minority of promiscuous drug-users accompanied by community-wide silence that keeps the gangs in business. In the end, he condemns his former gang for masquerading as a Latino "public service" organization while high-ranking members become rich from their youthful recruits' drug dealing. And he scoffs at their reliance on conformist rituals and violence (violations of the rituals were punished with full body beatings). Offering very little hope, this book captures the dark, self-destructive lot of countless urban teens. Like other gangland memoirs (such as Monster and Always Running), it is significant because it takes the reader deep inside a secretive and brutal ethnic gang subculture. (Aug.)

Sanchez, who had been raped at age five by a cousin, left Puerto Rico for Chicago when he was seven, and reveled in his new home, excelling in school and at baseball. But his unloving mother married a monster, and by the time Sanchez was ten, he was taking to the streets to avoid their vicious beatings. Frightened by the bloodshed, he resisted joining the Latin Kings, the largest and most violent gang in the city, but by the time he was 13, Sanchez was drinking and getting high and training himself to suppress his compassion and embrace the very brutality he had suffered. Initiated into sex by a woman nearly three times his age, he became a sexual predator and soon felt no compunction about shooting his rivals. A survivor who turned his life around, Sanchez writes plainly and powerfully, and what is shocking about his tragic tale is not the barbaric actions of young gangbangers but the appalling collusion of adults, from criminally abusive parents to mercenary gun dealers and immoral cops. Brilliant

I found this book completely by accident. I was searching for "My Reviews" and this along with a thousand other books and gadgets popped up. I saw this (not sure why it came up on a search of "My Reviews"), and it sounded interesting so I ordered a sample. The sample is all it took - I didn't hesitate to order the book, and immediately ordered his next book (Once a King Always a King) when I finished this one. His third book will be next (Lady Q).

Sanchez's story telling is brilliant - a clean, crisp, and remarkably detailed history of the events of a hardcore gang banger whose life revolved around alcohol, drugs, violence, and sex. Although there is plenty of abuse, it's not a "woe is me" tale of abuse or how the system beat him down. He doesn't glamorize the lifestyle. It's simply a tragic story of a kid who didn't know another life but somehow found a way out. It reminded me, "There but for the grace of God go I."

I literally couldn't stop reading this book - I read it walking to work, eating lunch, and every spare second of the day.

It was an okay book. Very brutal, but then he had a brutal life and came from an abusive household. It was interesting that he always saw himself as a coward. He's a serial rapist and he killed quite a few people, how is it that he's still a free man?. Maybe its in his next book. This book also reads like a book of exploints, not a book to say don't join a gang. On the contrary the way he tells it Latin Kings offer security, identity, status, stability, financial help etc. he keeps saying the bosses are the only ones profiting blah blah and they don't help blah blah and then directly contradicts what he said.

Gritty, no holds barred account of life in Humboldt Park, Chicago back in the day before the Yuppies and the Hipsters took over with their trendy renovations and restaurants.

Rey Sanchez writes his eyewitness account with clarity and vivid details of the characters and events that comprised the day to day events of the Chicago branch of the Latin Kings of the late 1980s and 1990s.

I have actually met one of the characters in the book and Rey described him perfectly.

Tip: If you're not from Chicago, Google the streets and/or park places as you read the book to get a better idea of the area encompassed by his tale and an understanding of just how dangerous things could be for him merely by walking onto a street one block over.
